About the School

Welcome

Where are we?
In Wallasey, which is part of the Wirral Local Education Authority and falls within the Merseyside Excellence in Cities area, identified by the Government as in need of particular financial support. Neither a leafy suburb, nor an inner city, but somewhere between the two.

What kind of school is Mosslands?
Mosslands is a successful community school which provides a truly comprehensive education for some 1,480 boys aged from 11 to 19 and which achieves excellent results at GCSE and post 16. The large Sixth Form of over 240 offers places to girls, and prides itself on the range and quality of its academic and vocational provision.  On average, over 70% of our Upper Sixth leavers progress to higher education each year.

We are an innovative school – for example, our College/Work Experience programme for 15 year olds provides an alternative to the traditional GCSE provision for appropriate youngsters in this age group.

Mosslands is well regarded also for its provision for pupils with special educational needs.  Currently over 230 pupils with varying special needs receive an education which is appropriate and helps them to achieve to the best of their abilities.

The school aims to provide a range of opportunities in a caring and structured manner.  We believe that all young people have an entitlement to learn in a safe and non-threatening environment.

The House system is fundamental to the strength and success of the school.  the three Houses of Faraday, Grenfell and Ruskin make smaller, more personal units within the school and provide continuity of care throughout the pupil’s school career.  The House system generates loyalty, service and competition.

We believe that an effective partnership with parents is also fundamental to a successful school. Parents rightly expect much from a school – that boys are well taught, well advised, well disciplined, well looked after and given opportunities to grow and develop as people, through a range of activities  both within and outside the curriculum.  Equally parents are expected to support our belief in the value of education and to support our demands for high standards of presentation, conduct and behaviour.

Our watchwords are Care, Commitment and Challenge.  We aim to provide a caring, but disciplined and orderly environment for pupils.  We look for a shared commitment by pupils, staff and parents to the value of learning.  We present the challenge of high academic and behavioural standards.

How do we know we are successful?
We are described by Ofsted as: “.. a school that provides a good standard of education for its pupils . “ And they also say that:  “The quality of teaching and learning are good ….the school is very well led….”  and    “...provides good value for money“.  The full report can be accessed on the Links page of this website.

The school has been rewarded over the past few years by the award of Beacon School status which recognises the progress and achievements of the school, and by a School Achievement Award, which recognises the contribution and commitment of its staff.  We have also achieved Artsmark and Sportsmark status in recognition of the curriculum we deliver in the areas of PE and Creative Arts.

Most recently, we have been designated as a specialist Technology College.  This will afford great capacity for a cross-curricular focus to our activities – in addition to pursuing excellence in our specialist subject areas of Technology, Maths and Science, we will engage all our staff and pupils in the process  of meeting the challenges of new technology.

Facts and figures can be found in the school prospectus, which can be accessed on the Links page.

From this page there are links to our school calendar, term dates and a map giving directions to the school.
