The Aimhigher Associates Scheme is a new targeted and structured programme which aims to guide and support learners with a long-term commitment of mentoring as they progress through full-time secondary education into further education at sixth form or college. The learners targeted will be from traditionally under-represented groups, from Years 9-13, who have the ability to progress to Higher Education (HE) but may encounter barriers to prevent them from reaching their full potential.

Aimhigher Associates support young people in school with 12-15 sessions per year. These sessions will comprise of structured face-to-face meetings and some e-mentoring.

Aimhigher Associates are provided with extensive accredited training and will be provided with all the necessary support, resources and materials required to conduct the sessions with mentees.

Aimhigher Associates

What are Aimhigher Associates?
Aimhigher Associates are students from local Universities and Further Education Colleges (HE in FE) who will provide support and encouragement to young people as they encounter the various transition milestones between Years 9-13.

What does the scheme hope to achieve?
  • To provide long-term support to selected young people so that they engage in the UCAS process from Yr 9 onward, ensuring enhanced support to those in Yr 11
  • An Aimhigher Associate will need to commit to a long-term relationship (at least one academic year) with the young people, the school and the families of the mentees
  • To use the wider resources of Aimhigher partnerships to help schools by sign-posting young people to the impartial HE-related information advice and guidance available
  • To ensure that young people from widening participation backgrounds progress to the full range of HE provision available including highly competitive universities or courses
What are the benefits to young people?
Engagement with an Aimhigher Associate will provide young people with:
  • An undergraduate role model
  • Opportunities to develop a confident and competent approach to the UCAS application & E-Prospectus processes
  • Support from an undergraduate who has recent experience of the transition from a school or college to an HE learning environment
  • Opportunities to sample a range of Aimhigher or other widening participation activities and experiences
  • Opportunities to research HE-related Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG) material
