As part of the Modern Languages enrichment programme, 25 boys from Year 9 had the opportunity to use their knowledge of French at Liverpool Football Club’s ReducÅte Centre, based at the Anfield stadium itself. The vast majority of the boys were Liverpool fans, although by the end of the day some of the others were converted to some extent, if not totally!

Staffed by a Centre Manager and students from the three Universities in Liverpool, ReducÅte aims to help children improve their skills in the key areas of literacy, numeracy and ICT. Our session was not only football-related, but focused on cultural knowledge of all things French – food and drink, geography and history to mention just a few.  Great emphasis was placed on rewarding achievement and building up the self-esteem of the boys to give them more confidence when learning French. Motivational, energetic staff used the environment of Liverpool Football Club to make the educational experience rewarding and our boys were offered learning opportunities in the ReducÅte ICT suite, the Club shop, the LFC Museum, and around the Anfield Stadium. Boys worked as individuals on the ICT-based activities, and in small groups during the Powerpoint quizzes, photo rounds, and on the LFC Museum treasure hunt.

The highlight for many was having their picture taken individually with the European Champions League trophy which, having been won by Liverpool on five occasions, now has a permanent place in the LFC Museum. They also had a chance to see the League Cup trophy won last month at Wembley, and go on a guided tour of the famous stadium.
