"Make It" Enterprise Challenge

Mosslands took part it an Enterprise Challenge sponsored by Sellafield Ltd and the manufacturing Institute

The Mosslands team amongst other schoolsA team of Year 9 pupils from Mosslands took part it an Enterprise Challenge sponsored by Sellafield Ltd and the manufacturing Institute.. The one day event was set up to encourage teams to set up their own manufacturing businesses and test their powers of innovation, creativity and teamwork.

Each member of the team was asked to match their own skills and qualities to those covered by a choice of job roles including Managing Director, Finance Director, Sales and Marketing Managers, Manufacturing Manager, Design Engineer, Logistics Manager and Quality Controller.

Throughout the course of the day each team had to design, cost and build a Nuclear Energy Waste Transport System (NEWTS) which would be used to transport enriched uranium – used to make electricity – across the UK. To keep the cargo safe pupils also had to design and make a safety Indicator System (SIS) to monitor radiation levels, as well as develop a marketing campaign, work to a budget and deal with logistics.

Working togetherFinally each team was also required to pitch their ideas to a panel of investors (Sellafield Ltd senior managers) in a ‘Dragon’s Den’ style presentation.

The judging of the event was extremely stringent, with the Dragon’s monitoring each teams’ progress throughout the day. The teams were not just measured on their completion of key tasks, but also on teamwork, use of initiative, problem solving, and other enterprising qualities.

Of the 15 teams taking part the team from Mosslands did very well, finishing second and qualifying for the north of England final to take place in June. Well Done!!!
