Challenging Maths

Y7 & 8 Mosslands Mathematics students took part in the Junior UK Maths Challenge

Year 7 and 8 Mosslands Mathematics students took part in the Junior UK Maths Challenge

As part of pupils being stretched and challenged at Mosslands, able Maths students were able to take part in the UKMT Junior Challenge on Thursday 25th April organised by Mr Blessing. The Junior Challenge is aimed at the top third of pupils in Year 8 or below in England and Wales.

The challenge involved answering 25 multiple choice questions in one hour and is sat in school under normal exam conditions. Pupils fill in the answer sheet in pencil and the Challenge is marked by UKMT. Questions from the Junior Challenge are then used as enrichment material by teachers in the classroom across the ability range.

The top 40% of students nationally receive a gold, silver or bronze certificate and Mosslands also receives a Best in School certificate. Around 1200 of the highest scorers across the country are then invited to participate in the Junior Mathematical Olympiad.

We expect the results in school in the next few weeks. Older pupils in the school have taken part in Intermediate and Senior Challenges earlier this year and did very well with many achieving gold certificates.

Congratulations to Charlie Campbell Year 10, who achieved not only a gold certificate but also achieved the highest mark in the Intermediate Challenge in the school.
