Four Mosslands Students enjoyed an eventful day being filmed by the BBC enjoying a morning at Cammell Lairds Shipyard where they hope to study for an Engineering Diploma.

Here the boys give an account of their day:

They boysToday Corey, Kurtis, Yusuf and Myself from the Engineering Diploma were interviewed by the BBC and the Artemis Media as our Headteacher (Mr. Rodaway) and the Co- executive of the Maritime Training Centre signed a document of partnership. After this we all went down to the maritime training centre to try the simulators and have a look around Cammell Lairds. Whilst we were having a look round we were getting interviewed and filmed. It was quite like making a video diary of what had happened in the day.

When we first got to the Training Centre we had a go on the simulators. In my opinion I think the are a good way to test your driving skills if you are working on the docks as a crane or lorry driver. I enjoyed the lorry simulator however I kept crashing Simulatorinto cones, however Corey and Yusuf did well. Whilst this was happening Kurtis was having a go on the crane simulator which was very hard. You have two levers which move left, right, up, down and then they can grab or release the crates. Kurtis then got interviewed. He was asked what he liked, would he want to work as a maritime engineer, and why he took the course. After we had our little play we went down to the shipyard having a little walk around to see what it was like on a dry-deck.

The Lairds site is Cammell Lairdsmassive; there were loads of cranes, heavy machinery and obviously the ships. We all had to wear high a visibility jacket and helmet for health and safety reasons. Whist we were having a look round the camera man asked us to do some “acting” for the news tonight. We were stood next to the ship called the Fort Rosalie which looked like it was being fixed or repaired or maybe it might have just been getting updated. After we did our “acting” we had a few photos taken and then we came back to school.

ActingI think that today has been a very good day and that it will be quite a thing to say that we are going to be on the news. I have seen new things which I didn’t think happened on a shipyard such as the mobile food truck which is basically a food truck that comes to the shipyard at dinnertime and then the workers would come down to pay for the food.
