The History of Mosslands School |
||
| Welcome |
The
history of Mosslands School began in Vaughan Road, New
Brighton when it started life as Wallasey Central School. Eventually it moved to
Coronation Avenue and became one of the few ‘Technical
Schools’ established after the Butler Act of 1944. Recognising the
potential of the school, Wallasey Education Authority
commissioned a new purpose built school to be sited in
Mosslands Drive, Wallasey Village. The then ultra modern
plate glass building was opened by, appropriately, Sir Harry
Pilkington and the modern era
began.
The
school population was around 500 with 20 staff. The Headteacher Mr
Kenneth Williams, though proud of his school was never
satisfied in its perceived third place in a town of two other
grammar schools.
Eventually in 1959 the council conferred parity and the
only Technical Grammar School in the country was
established. The
new headmaster J D Petit joined the school in 1961 and it was
he who steered the school to its prominent position. Re –organising the
pastoral structure of the school into is unique vertical
structure of three houses. Mr Petit prepared for
the coming comprehensive system.
Wallasey
chose a Middle School system and the school changed its name
for the fourth time to Mosslands Senior comprehensive. The school continued
to build on its reputation under the leadership of headmaster
Bill Mitchell as Wallasey once again re-organised into 11 – 18
schools. The now
Mosslands School occupied two sites and the population of 1250
boys, a mixed sixth form and a staff of
100+. Headteacher Gordon Fair took the school to one site and
a massive rebuild took place re –equipping the school with
magnificent science laboratories, art studios, music suites,
computer rooms and a library. Extensions provided
rooms for humanities and improvements to Modern Languages,
Maths and English with further rebuilds due
soon. Mosslands school still retains much of the character of its distinguished past as it now plans for Technology college status. Its reputation has been hard earned and success in gaining university places has set new standards in the area. In a changing environment the school has constantly adapted yet is determined to maintain its prominent position and to serve pupils at all levels.
