Accelerated Reader

Here at Mosslands we encourage our boys in Key Stage 3 to engage enthusiastically with the Accelerated Reader scheme. Our aim is to develop a lifelong love of both books and reading in Mosslands boys in order to help them to continue to develop their literacy skills and, in turn, be able to offer them the best opportunities to successfully access all areas of the school curriculum.

Our Accelerated Reader scheme enables pupils, teachers and parents to monitor and personalise reading activities and help our boys to reinforce their understanding of the content of the books that they read. It guides them to choose books which are both appropriate to their level of ability and their interests. Pupils will be given a number of opportunities to read at school, both in form time and in their English lessons.

We would greatly appreciate your support in encouraging them to read their books as part of their independent study time at home.

At the end of each book they will take a short, computer based quiz to measure their understanding. You will receive feedback on their progress at regular intervals throughout the year and the scheme will enable us to ensure that your son’s/ward’s reading materials are suited to their individual needs and that they receive appropriate levels of support in their individual development.

An important factor in the success of this scheme is the initial testing process which is known as the Star Test. These take place in school at the start of each term. No preparation is required by pupils.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you in advance for your support of the scheme by encouraging them to read at home, discussing the books with the boys and reminding them that they need to have their reading books with them at all times in school.

The role of the parent/guardian is key to the success of the scheme.
