An event to inspire the next generation of scientists....

During February half term seven year 9 Mosslands pupils ( Jake Brooster, Christopher Ffoulkes, Jim Parsons, Daniel Smith, Jon Edgeley, Daniel Shakeshaft and Michael Ellis) along with 90 other young people from across Greater Merseyside attended the second ‘Choose Science’ event organised by the Educational Opportunities team from the University of Liverpool.

The event, which was jointly funded by the University and HEFCE, aimed to encourage more year 9 learners to choose double or triple science at GCSE, and to make the link between their own school curriculum, study at university and potential future career options.

The young people spent three days on campus where they attended two large lectures, where they saw how University teaching differs to school based learning, and they also took part in hands-on science experiments, interactive lectures and debated issues such as climate change, genetic engineering and the use of nano technology. They also worked closely with current undergraduate students and learnt about student life.

University staff were impressed with the commitment shown by Mosslands pupils across the whole three days. Pupil comments included:-

‘I really liked doing the practical lectures’

‘I liked the debates as everyone got involved’

‘The three days were amazing, meeting new people and learning new things.'
