Robotic’s  challenge at Daresbury Science  Park

A team of  four Year 9 students, Ben Harding, Reece O’Neill, Jacob Taylor and Callum Williams  visited  Daresbury Science  Park  on Wednesday 14th May and  this is their story…

On our trip to the Daresbury Laboratories Science and Technology facilities, our team had the task of building a robot!  The robot which took us over three hours to build had independently controllable wheel mechanisms that allowed it to move forward and backwards. It could turn on a pin head and had a vertically moveable arm and a vice like grip.

In a tournament against the other schools,  we had to use our robot driving skills in a game of robot basket ball. In the group stage of the tournament, we won 3, drew 1 and lost 1 which put us into the  semi–finals. The atmosphere in the semi was very tense and if it was not for some mechanical problems I’m sure we would have won but in the end we just had to accept a close defeat.  The whole day was great and we all had an amazing feeling when the robot first moved after putting it together. We were disappointed not to win but really enjoyed a day away from school!
