A Busy Term for the PSHE Department

During this Autumn Term the PSHE Department has organised and delivered many events to enhance pupils’ understanding of the issues around Relationship and Sex Education, Personal Health and Safety and opportunities to contribute to society.

In September Year 9 took part in workshops delivered by “Diversity Role Models” (www.diversityrolemodels.org/). This enabled students to understand the issues around gender and sexuality by working with visiting speakers who have experience of the prejudice and bullying that can be experienced by different groups in society. This was a valuable activity and the pre and post workshop data showed that students benefitted from the information given in the workshop. Through the term year 9 continued to look at issues around bullying including homophobia and racism. In the Spring Term Brook will be visiting to work with year 9 on many RSE issues as well as other issues young people face.

Also in September the sixth form received an assembly from the Anthony Nolan Trust (http://www.anthonynolan.org/). This informative session explored the issues of blood and bone marrow donations as well as encouraging students to carry donor cards. Lower 6 have also covered the value of work experience to their future applications and careers. They are now working on their placements for the summer term (22nd June -  3rd July 2015).

Both year 7 and year 10 have been visited by the Wirral Road Safety Officers to discuss personal safety.  In November year 10 are visiting the Pilgrim Arts Centre in Birkenhead to see the production of “If You Loved Me You Would” a youth theatre production which explores the issues of healthy teenage relationships, a follow up workshop will be given in the New Year. They will also receive sessions from The Open Door Centre in Liscard (http://theopendoorcentre.org/) exploring issues around Mental Health. Year 11 undertook these workshops last year and they will get additional support from Wirral NHS Early Intervention Team in PSHE lessons either side of the Christmas break.

Representatives from Kooth (https://www.kooth.com/) came in to work with Year 7 and each class had a session to register with their website which supports young people with the issues they will face in the coming years. This adds to the support provision that pupils have in school and at home. Year 7 have also received their letters about next year’s camp (22nd June – 1st July) and all correspondence can be found on the school website. http://www.mosslands.co.uk/news/?pid=9&nid=2&storyid=628 . This is a valuable experience that gives real benefit to students as the report for Camp 2014 available on the website will show. Any queries about Camp should be made to Mrs C Lloyd, Mrs Rycroft or Mr G Jones.

On 10th and 11th February all year 11 students will be given a “mock job interview” as part of their careers education. We already have a number of local employers who have agreed to give up their time to support this activity. If you are able to help please contact Mr Taylor or Mrs Rycroft at the school.
