Mosslands’ STEM students meet Alice!

Yes, the Alice in question is the “Alice in Wonderland” but this Alice can only be found at the “Science Wonderland” that is the  Science Technology Funding Council facilities at Daresbury labs.

Yes, the Alice in question is the “Alice in Wonderland” but this Alice can only be found at the “Science Wonderland” that is the  Science Technology Funding Council facilities at Daresbury labs.  This special Alice, is a particle accelerator (similar to the Large Hedron Collider) and stands for Accelerators and Laser in Combined Experiments and was named as a tribute to one of Daresbury’s  famous sons,  Lewis  Carroll.  As part of a day discovering how Physics affects every day life, a group of Year 9 Mosslands’  students  had a 3-D  virtual tour of the particle accelerator. They took part in “hair standing on end” demonstrations  by  Senior Accelerator physicists,  “had a go” at ground penetrating archaeology techniques  as used on T.V. shows such as Time Team and got to build a 15 metre long suspension bridge!  In calmer moments they even found that Scientists and Engineers live the high life in Hawaii!  Here they can be found  on top of  mountain peaks,  running and maintaining some of the World’s most important telescopes.  So if you fancy the idea of Sun, surf and grass skirts out in Hawaii study Physics’, Maths and Engineering and see where it takes you!
