Mosslands STEAM Day

On Thursday 4th February, over 650 took part in activities based around the disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths (STEAM) as part of a special day devoted to STEAM careers and skills.

The Mosslands’ STEAM Day saw local and national employers, together with representatives from three Universities, deliver over 1300 student hours of workshops, lectures, demonstrations and activities to enthusiastic students across all year groups. Over 94% of Key Stage 3 and 80% or Key Stage 4 students took part in the event.

Many of the organisations incorporated a theme of problem-solving throughout their presentations. National Grid, who delivered 18 workshops, challenged Year 8 students to “build a bridge” and discussed the potential use of robots.  Whilst the Army taught students about decision-making in the battlefield and how these thinking processes can be applied to making personal  decisions.

Dr. Elisabeth Rushworth, a lecturer in Earth Science at the University of Liverpool said, “Thank you so much for  such a super day and inviting me to spend time with one of your Year 11 classes. They were super to work with, responsible, and polite. They joined in with the discussions and activities brilliantly!”

Mosslands “old boys”, Gareth Jones and Philip Billington, from civil engineering firm, BAM Nuttall, enjoyed returning to school and providing a work shop that involved engineering  with marshmallows and spaghetti!  Mr Jones, now a Chartered Engineer and Project Manager said, “It was a good trip down memory lane for me. It was pleasing to see how well the boys worked together to come up with ways of achieving their outputs.”

Other activities throughout the day included the building of rubber-band racers by undergraduate students from the University of Liverpool, the demonstration of a dancing and storytelling humanoid Nao Robot thanks to the Birkenhead based IT consultancy firm Hi-impact,  a presentation on the production of synthetic diamonds  by Tom Wang of Element 6, that’s not to mention  contributions from institute of Chartered Accountants England and Wales, Institution of Engineering and Technology and VEX robots.

All staff at Mosslands would like to thank every guest speaker and presenter involved for providing such an interesting and exciting experience for our students.
