The first two heats of the Aimhigher Science Olympics 2011 took place during January and February with local schools competing in a day long series of events against each other for the chance to win through to the grand finals later in the year.

The teams of Year 10 pupils visited the University of Liverpool to take part in a range of events that tested their science knowledge, team working and communication skills to achieve the highest scores on the day.

Teams competed against each other and teachers as they attempted to gain maximum points in activities that included 'projectile rocketing', 'sweet trader', it's about time', 'am I hovered' and 'stick and span'.

Richard Finch from Aimhigher explains:
 "The competition is a way of making science more accessible to school pupils.  We hope that activities such as these will begin to spark an interest and lead to them studying science based subjects in further and higher education."

Congratulations to Mr Lam and the Year 10 team of Jake Broster, Alex Segar, Jack Sharpen and Jim Parsons who took part in the competition. The top schools from each heat qualify for June's final, and the schools going through to the finals so far are:
