On Friday 19th March a number of Mosslands pupils along with 80 pupils from schools across the Liverpool city region participated in a series of sessions as part of a Built Environment Awareness Day, during which they received hands-on experience in a number of different areas. The day was a joint initiative between construction companies Balfour Beatty, Vinci, Morgan Ashurst and Liverpool Community College who hosted the event.

The sessions explored areas as diverse as structural engineering, computer aided design and plumbing among others.

An exercise included using AutoCAD to design the layout of a property, with pupils gaining an insight into an industry standard package. Pupils were able to consider all aspects of the industry rather than just the traditional trades that are usually associated with construction.

Sarah Utterson, assistant training officer at Balfour Beatty, said: “We wanted to give these youngsters, who were invited because they had expressed an interest in finding out about these industries, the opportunity to get real hands-on experience. They will also have got the opportunity to speak with professionals to get an insight into what their day-to –day jobs entail.”

Students came away from the day with..

  • Hands-on experience in Technology and Construction for Year 9 pupils
  • Advice from industry leaders
