Accelerated Reader

Here at Mosslands we encourage our boys in Key Stage 3 to engage enthusiastically with the Accelerated Reader scheme. Our aim is to develop a lifelong love of both books and reading in Mosslands boys in order to help them to continue to develop their literacy skills and, in turn, be able to offer them the best opportunities to successfully access all areas of the school curriculum.

Our Accelerated Reader scheme enables pupils, teachers and parents to monitor and personalise reading activities and help our boys to reinforce their understanding of the content of the books that they read. It guides them to choose books which are both appropriate to their level of ability and their interests. Pupils will be given a number of opportunities to read at school, both in form time and in their English lessons. Additionally, one lesson per week is dedicated to reading their Accelerated Reader book.

At the end of each book they read, pupils will take a short, computer based quiz to measure their understanding.

An important factor in the success of this scheme is the initial testing process which is known as the Star Test. These take place in school at the start of each term. No preparation is required by pupils.

We would greatly appreciate your support in encouraging them to read their books as part of their independent study time at home. To help you support them, The Mosslands School have ensured there is more than one way to get your son/ward reading at home.

Firstly, Reading Cloud is our schools online Library Catalogue; you can find every book that we have in the school library using this platform. Each student has his own online presence on Reading Cloud that allows him to search our library books, reserve and review books and interact with others. You can use this website to encourage him to reserve a book, which he can then pick up from the library.

You can access reading cloud using this link https://www.readingcloud.net/  and through the App. All parents/carers can download the app to their phone for free by searching for iMLS student in your app store. Log in details can be found on the Accelerated Reader Remote Learning Page.

Secondly, we now have access to hundreds of Ebooks that you can borrow using an online app. The software is Overdrive with the student app being called Sora. Hundreds of eBooks can be accessed online!

The app can be found by clicking this webpage: https://soraapp.com/library/uksecondary or by searching for Sora, by Overdrive in your app store. To access the eBooks, bring up the Sora Student app on your home computer or personal device. To find log in instructions, access the Accelerated Reader Remote Learning page.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you in advance for your support of the scheme by encouraging them to read at home, discussing the books with the boys and reminding them that they need to have a reading book with them at all times in school where possible.
