Design & Technology

Welcome to Design & Technology

In Year 7 you will have three lessons a fortnight in Design & Technology (plus targeted homework that will support and develop upon the things that we do in class). We view your first year of Design & Technology as a foundation course; over the 3 terms you will cover all of the specialist areas and you will get to work with lots of different materials and technologies including wood, metal, plastic, textiles, electronics and food.

The teachers in the Design & Technology department are (from left to right)

  • Mr. Bradshaw
  • Mr. Egan (Head of Department)
  • Mrs. Padmore
  • Mr. Jones (Senior Lead - Extended Curriculum)
  • Mrs. Lubbe
  • Miss. Owen
  • Mr. Roberts (Technician)

Don’t worry about how much you have (or have not) studied in your previous school - you will quickly find that everybody develops slightly different interests in this subject. It is more important that you give everything a go, and that you show us your skills and tell us about your interests. By the end of Year 7 our aim is to ensure that all students have the confidence to express their ideas, the skills to develop them into high quality products and a good understanding of safe and effective working habits.

The projects that you will cover will be:

  • Moisture Detector
  • Mechanical Toys
  • Typography
  • Food

We expect you to arrive to lessons prepared and ready to work, during lessons we will encouraged you to be independent and to use your imagination to solve problems and come up with exciting ideas. We will insist that you listen carefully and follow instructions, as we do have to ensure your safety. We will also require you to be respectful and to contribute fully to group activities (including room organisation and packing away). Design & Technology is a great subject, and it is even better when we work together, help each other and share the responsibility for our learning.
