Food Technology

Food is a fundamental part of life. All pupils should have a basic understanding of the properties of food and particularly the principles of hygiene and safe food handling. They also need practical skills to prepare food. These elements will benefit and protect pupils now and throughout their lives.             (Mr Bradshaw - Subject Lead)

Subject Overview

Food Technology is part of a group of Design Technology subjects that you will take in years 7 and 8.

The lessons will be a combination of practical cooking sessions and demonstrations by your teacher of the dishes you will cook. These will be supported with theory lessons teaching you about the functions of ingredients, hygiene and safety in a Food Room and how to create a healthy balanced diet.

If you choose Food Technology as a GCSE subject you will study the theory aspects in more depth. You will also have the opportunity to design the meals you cook, often to meet specified dietary, cultural and ethical needs.

In Mosslands you will have the use of two fully equipped specialised Food Technology rooms. Each boasts a commercial standard steam convection catering oven. Both rooms have a professional kitchen feel with stainless steel work surfaces and all equipment is racked out on steel shelving.

Extra- Curricular Opportunities

Mosslands Food Technology runs many exciting after school “Young Chefs” clubs and has also ran an Artisan Bread Making club.
