Spanish - A Level

About the course:

The A level course at Mosslands aims to develop students' competence in the four skills of reading, listening, speaking and writing. Students acquire a broad range of vocabulary and deepen their understanding of the grammar, leading to more accurate and fluent use of the language. Our students learn more about the Spanish culture, society and history of the countries where the language is spoken, through the study of a film, a book and the opportunity to research a topic of interest of the student's choosing for the speaking exam. The course is centered on four main topic areas, which develop students understanding of life in the countries where the language is spoken.

We study a varied range of topics: Being a young person in Spanish speaking society (families and citizenship, youth trends and personal identity, education and employment opportunities). Understanding the Spanish-speaking world (regional culture and heritage, media, art, film and music in the Spanish-speaking world. We also learn about diversity and difference (migration and integration, cultural identity and marginalisation, cultural enrichment and celebrating difference, discrimination, and diversity). 

Subject content:

The mandatory units are:

1. Social issues and trends
2. Political and artistic culture
3. Grammar

How will it be assessed:

Paper 1: Listening, Reading and Writing
Duration: 2 hours 30 minutes; total raw mark: 100

Paper 2: Writing
Duration: 2 hours; total raw mark: 80

Paper 3: Speaking
Duration: 21–23 minutes (including 5 minutes supervised preparation time); total raw mark: 60

Higher Education:

This extra skill, of being able to operate in a number of languages, means that they can benefit from employment opportunities not only in the UK, but also throughout the world. Studying languages also develops transferable skills sought by employers in areas outside the traditional realms of translating, interpreting and teaching. Such skills are excellent written and spoken communication skills, the ability to present a well-structured argument, the ability to think on your feet and adapt, problem solving and building relationships with others. 

What is expected of you:

Not only will you be expected to consistently learn new vocabulary and master all Spanish grammar, you will also be expected to take an active interest in Spanish speaking countries that includes their literature, arts, culture and heritage. You will be expected to follow Spanish news and seek an active interest in Spanish Culture all over the world. A total immersion into the Spanish World and a willingness to open your horizon is key to success especially if you intend to pursue your studies at University or abroad in the future.

What it prepares you for:

Language skills at this level are highly sought after by employers all around the world so studying Spanish will greatly advance your employability when you step into your chosen career. Furthermore, a language degree develops essential skills required on a wide range of employment opportunities such as communication, independence, ability to weigh up an issue from different viewpoints, cultural awareness, adaptability, resilience, speed of thought, an eye for detail and analysis. 

Knowledge of a foreign language is ever more valuable in an increasingly connected world. Many employers look for knowledge of at least one other language across a wide range of jobs.

Entry requirements:

We require that you get at least a grade 5 in Spanish GCSE in order to be able to follow the AQA Curriculum.
