Hello Yellow (World Mental Health Day) - Friday 10th October

Our school will be taking part in Hello Yellow on Friday 10th October to raise awareness and funds for YoungMinds, the UK’s leading charity for young people’s mental health.

No young person should feel alone with their mental health and that’s why Hello Yellow matters. We’re taking this opportunity as a school community to come together and show our students that we’re with them, and they’re never alone with their mental health.

We’ll be taking part by replacing one item of uniform with something yellow for a £1 donation (normal school shoes must not be swapped out) or buying a yellow ribbon.

Most importantly, we want to share the resources which YoungMinds offer to support parents and carers if you ever need help and advice to support your children. This includes:
• online resources (www.youngminds.org.uk/parent/)
• a phone line, open 9.30am-4pm (0808 802 5544)
• an online chat for parents and carers to speak to trained professionals if you’re concerned about your children’s mental health (www.youngminds.org.uk/parents-helpline/)

Flu Vaccinations

If you wish to register your son for a flu vaccination next week, you can use the link below. Only boys who have been registered will receive the vaccination.

Trips

We have had a fabulous response to the New York trip launch. The deposit is still open on MCAS for anyone else who wants to reserve a place.

The deadline for deposits for the Paris trip has been extended to the end of this week.

A reminder that the ski trip must be paid in full by 21/11/25 and there is a meeting for parents on Tuesday evening. Please ensure you have filled out the online form (emailed home yesterday) prior to the meeting. If not, please bring your son's passport to the meeting, so passport information can be noted.

Last week, 39 students from Years 9 –13 embarked on an incredible international trip to Iceland, the land of fire and ice. The journey was filled with breathtaking scenery, fascinating learning experiences, and memories to last a lifetime.

During their stay, students explored some of Iceland’s most famous natural wonders — including the geothermal hot springs of the Secret Lagoon, the thundering Gullfoss waterfall, and the spectacular Geysir geothermal area. They also stood in awe at the Thingvellir National Park, where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates meet, and took in the dramatic views of volcanic landscapes and glaciers. Students walked in the pathway of the 2021 eruption, and it was wonderful to see so many budding geologists in the group as they mined for Obsidian.

Throughout the trip, our students were a credit to the school. Their excellent behaviour and enthusiasm impressed everyone they met. In fact, the EasyJet cabin manager personally praised the group for their outstanding manners and positivity during the flights — a compliment that made staff very proud!

The trip was not only a chance to experience one of the world’s most unique environments, but also a wonderful opportunity to learn outside the classroom.

Well done to all the students who took part – you represented our school brilliantly!

Library

In honour of Black History Month, we are recognising the incredible voices and stories of Black British authors. These books in particular explore and celebrate identity, Black history or simply tell a compelling tale. All available in our library now!

Our Book of the Week is If My Words Had Wings by Danielle Jawando and tells the story of Tyrell Forrester, who is getting out of a young offender's prison and determined to turn his life around. However, despite his release, societal discrimination makes it difficult for Ty to truly be free. Inspired by a visiting poet, Ty discovers a whole new world through poetry and is finally finding his voice. Will society see him as anything other than a criminal?

Sporting Success

One of our Y12 students, Oliver Sutton, has been selected to win the Sir Jack Hobbs Silver Jubilee Memorial Award, which is given to the most outstanding under 16 schoolboy cricketer in England. This is an extremely prestigious award and has been won by Jacob Bethell, Haseeb Hameed and Dominic Sibley who, in recent times, have all represented or currently represent England! Other famous winners include Michael Atherton, Mike Gatting and Mark Ramprakash (all ex England captains!). This is a major achievement for Oliver, who will be presented with the award on Thursday 6th November by ex-England captain Alec Stewart in London. Below is some more information about the award:

https://www.cricketsociety.org.uk/pages/john-hobbs

The chair of the Cricket Society said that Oliver had caught the eye of the selectors when playing for Wallasey 1st team, taking important wickets with his leg spin bowling, and his performance for Cheshire U16s, who made it to the national semi-final, with Oliver taking the most wickets.

Charity Fundraising

We raised £172.65 for the Pulmonary Fibrosis charity selling muffins last month. This is the highest amount we have raised for a single muffin sale, which was mainly down to a couple of large donations from staff. Many thanks to everyone who purchased and supported the sale.

The next bake sale will be cookies on Tuesday 14th October £1 each.

Art Department

You can follow us on Instagram @art_mosslands to see some fabulous examples of the work produced by our students.

Reporting an Absence

Parents must telephone the school attendance line (0151 638 8131, option 1) on the first day of absence before 8.45am and on each subsequent day of absence. Alternatively, you can email attendance@mosslands.wirral.sch.uk. Please do not use the admin@mosslands email or the contact school option on the My Child at School app as these do not go directly to attendance, and you may still get a truancy call. It is our duty to keep your child safe, so if you do not inform us, you will receive a truancy call. You will receive 6 further calls until you respond.  The number which will display as an incoming call is a Sheffield number, 0114 303 4042.

If a student arrives at school after 9:15 AM, when the registers officially close, their late arrival is recorded as a U code. This code means the child is present on site, but too late to receive a present mark — and as such, it is recorded as an unauthorised absence.

Please be aware that repeated U codes can lead to further action, as they affect your child’s overall attendance percentage and may be subject to monitoring.

We understand that occasional lateness can happen for a variety of reasons. If you are experiencing difficulties that are impacting punctuality, please don’t hesitate to contact us so we can work together to support you.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support in ensuring your child attends school on time every day.

Please be advised that if a student is absent from school for three consecutive days, a member of staff will carry out a home visit to check that everything is okay even if a phone call has already been received from a parent or carer.

This is part of our commitment to safeguarding and ensuring the wellbeing of all our students. We appreciate your understanding and support in this matter.

Medication in School

If you have any questions or concerns regarding medication in school, please contact the SEND Department. Students should not bring medication into school and any medication should be registered at reception. If your child is diagnosed as being asthmatic, following on from medical guidelines, please ensure they have an inhaler on then at all times and that we hold a spare within school. Many thanks.
