Year 10 Work Experience Deadline

Please continue to let us know if your son needs support and for those who have found placements, please enter this information into the Placements Tool on Unifrog. All resources are in the Work Experience 2026 Google Classroom, code q7k2ayjb

Science Homework

Thank you for your support as we have begun using Sparx Science for homework this term. We are pleased to share that many students have been engaging well with the platform, and we are already seeing the benefits that regular, high-quality homework brings to their learning.

Homework plays an important role in strengthening students’ understanding of key scientific ideas. Through Sparx, students receive personalised practice that helps them revisit topics, build confidence, and make steady progress at their own pace. The clear explanations and structured questions also allow students to work independently while still being supported.

To celebrate students’ efforts and consistency, we have now started awarding Sparx Science certificates. These recognise hard work, resilience, and commitment to learning, and we are delighted to see so many students already achieving them. More certificates will continue to be awarded next term.

As always, homework is set every Monday and is due the following Monday, and we will continue to send reminders through MCAS. Please encourage your child to log in regularly and keep up with their tasks. There will be no official homework set over the Christmas break, but if pupils want to continue with Sparx, they can use their personalised learning tab for practice and support with their science.

If you have any questions about Sparx Science or how best to support your child at home, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Merry Christmas.

Christmas Cracker Cinema

Each day next week there will be a Christmas film playing in the main hall during lunchtime for all students. Students are welcome to bring sweets and popcorn to eat while watching the film. No fizzy drinks are allowed. I hope the boys enjoy this festive treat.

Don't Dodge December

Don't Dodge December continues next week. Students are excitedly getting their card stamped each morning for every full day they are present in school. On the last day of term, students with fully stamped cards will be invited to attend the Christmas grotto in the hall. Only six more days to go!

Twelve Days of Mosslands

In each assembly in December, all students in the assembly that have 100% attendance up to that day will have the opportunity to be chosen by the 'wheel of names'. If they are selected, they can choose a box from a tree of boxes. Inside each box is a treat – to be confirmed as the boxes are opened!  So far, students have won breakfasts for themselves and their whole form, sweets and chocolates for themselves and their form, a private gaming session in our new Esports lab and also a free session on a flight simulator.

Library

We're honouring Human Rights Day this week and our Book of the Week is Part of The Story That Started Before Me: Poems About Black British History. This extraordinary collection of poems is curated by George the Poet and takes readers on a thought-provoking journey through Black British history. There is a copy in the school library now!

For book recommendations, library events and more, follow @library_mosslands on Instagram.

Drama Club

We have now finished for this term. There won't be a session on Monday. Mrs Brett would like to thank all the pupils who have attended this term. We will start back again on Monday 5th January!

Students enjoyed their make-up special effects session this week with Miss Rowe. Some realistic wounds were made to support their performance work.

Our Approach to Attendance, Welfare and Safeguarding

Regular school attendance is vital for every pupil’s learning, wellbeing, and future opportunities. We want to share an overview of how we support attendance and how we work in partnership with families throughout the year.

Our expectation is that all pupils attend school every day and on time. However, we understand that difficulties with attendance often arise from wider challenges, and we take a supportive, solution-focused approach.

How We Support Pupils and Families

If your child is absent due to illness, SEND needs, mental health difficulties, family circumstances, or other barriers, we will work closely with you to understand what is happening and explore the right support. This may include:

  • A named member of staff to coordinate communication
  • Pastoral, wellbeing or academic support
  • Reasonable adjustments or a phased return
  • Liaison with external agencies if needed

Where a pupil has an EHC plan, we will also inform the local authority if attendance becomes a concern.

Telephone Calls and Home Visits

To keep pupils safe, it is essential that we know the reason for any absence.

  • If your child is absent and we have not heard from you, you will receive a same-day telephone call.
  • If absence continues without explanation, we will phone you each day to check your child’s safety and wellbeing.
  • If a pupil has two consecutive days of unauthorised absence, a member of the pastoral team will call home.
  • If there are three consecutive days of unauthorised absence, a home visit will be carried out. This is part of our safeguarding duty to ensure that all pupils are safe.

We appreciate your understanding - these steps are not punitive; they are in place to protect children.

Working Together

Strong attendance relies on a positive partnership between school and home. We ask parents/carers to:

  • Ensure your child attends school daily and arrives on time
  • Contact school before 8:45am on each day of absence
  • Avoid term-time holidays except in exceptional circumstances
  • Work with us if we identify attendance concerns

Our aim is always to provide timely, appropriate support that helps every pupil feel confident, safe and ready to learn.

If you have any concerns about your child’s attendance or wellbeing, please contact us - we are here to help.

Thank you for your continued support.

Support with Mental Health

With the end of the school term and Christmas break approaching, it is important to remind students of the support they can access during their time off. Mental health matters all year round, and Kooth can provide that immediate support.

Kooth offers free, safe, and anonymous mental health support for young people aged 10-18 (up to 25 with additional needs). It’s a space where they can talk, read helpful articles, and connect with qualified professionals - all online.

Learn more HERE . Here is also a  short video for students that shows how they can access Kooth over the winter break.

Here are links to digital resources that can be accessed by student and parents/carers:

Art Department

You can follow us on Instagram @art_mosslands to see some fabulous examples of the work produced by our students.

Reporting an Absence

Parents must telephone the school attendance line (0151 638 8131, option 1) on the first day of absence before 8.45am and on each subsequent day of absence. Alternatively, you can email attendance@mosslands.wirral.sch.uk. Please do not use the admin@mosslands email or the contact school option on the My Child at School app as these do not go directly to attendance, and you may still get a truancy call. It is our duty to keep your child safe, so if you do not inform us, you will receive a truancy call. You will receive 6 further calls until you respond.  The number which will display as an incoming call is a Sheffield number, 0114 303 4042.

If a student arrives at school after 9:15 AM, when the registers officially close, their late arrival is recorded as a U code. This code means the child is present on site, but too late to receive a present mark — and as such, it is recorded as an unauthorised absence.

Please be aware that repeated U codes can lead to further action, as they affect your child’s overall attendance percentage and may be subject to monitoring.

We understand that occasional lateness can happen for a variety of reasons. If you are experiencing difficulties that are impacting punctuality, please don’t hesitate to contact us so we can work together to support you.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support in ensuring your child attends school on time every day.

Please be advised that if a student is absent from school for two unauthorised consecutive days then a member of the pastoral team will contact home via telephone and after three unauthorised consecutive days, a member of staff will carry out a home visit to check that everything is okay, even if a phone call has already been received from a parent or carer.

This is part of our commitment to safeguarding and ensuring the wellbeing of all our students. We appreciate your understanding and support in this matter.

Medication in School

If you have any questions or concerns regarding medication in school, please contact the SEND Department. Students should not bring medication into school and any medication should be registered at reception. If your child is diagnosed as being asthmatic, following on from medical guidelines, please ensure they have an inhaler on them at all times and that we hold a spare within school. Many thanks.
