A Message from Mr Whiteley

A warm welcome back to all of our pupils to what has been a very cold start to the new term.

For those Y11 and sixth form students who are sitting final exams over this January period, I wish them the very best of luck. The exams already completed this week, have been conducted in an exemplary manner.

A reminder that parents' evening for Y11 is tonight from 4 to 6.45pm.

As you will undoubtedly have seen, building work has finally commenced for the new school. Over the next few weeks, this preliminary work will see the establishment of a new car park adjacent to what is currently the KS3 playground and the erection of a site fence to secure the building area and keep students safe. The current mesh fencing will be removed as soon as the more substantial fence is finished.

At the same time, the cycle path on Wallacre will be moved to the far side of the field temporarily before being finally reinstated at the new school boundary, as part of the local authority’s renovation of the playing fields that are taking place in tandem with the school building programme. Please take care if you use this cycle path, especially when joining the road. Some drivers may not be aware of the change in its location.

While these projects are under construction, the edge of the Wallacre field alongside Mosslands Drive will be fenced to protect the site. Although it doesn’t touch the road, the fence will make the road feel narrower (especially with the current temporary mesh fencing) and I implore all the community to take extra care when driving or cycling on Mosslands Drive.

Similarly, although site traffic has been instructed to avoid the start and end of the school day, I ask all parents who drive, to try and avoid Mosslands Drive by dropping pupils in Wallasey Village rather than the residential streets by the school, and for those for whom that is not possible, please respect our neighbours and do not obstruct either their drives or their cars.

With the building phase in progress, please do not obstruct school gates or the zig-zag parking restriction markings outside school; they will be in constant use.

To celebrate the beginning of work on the new school, and the appointment of a new catering and hospitality manager, next week we will trial the first new menu items at lunchtime.

Please make sure your son knows that next Thursday (15th January), we will have the first of our new menu items available: loaded beef chilli nachos, Korean-style street food burger, dirty fries. Alongside this, we will be serving some old favourites: scouse, oriental chicken noodles and pizza.

Is your son eligible for free school meals?

If you have not already done so, you are encouraged to sign-up to this free school meal checker.  The system checks weekly and will inform the school should your child become eligible for a free school meal.

The system is quick and simple to register for and will continue to check throughout your son's time at The Mosslands School.

Sparx Science Homework Club

If any students are struggling to complete their Sparx science homework at home, Mr Wood is running a club every Tuesday lunchtime 12.50 - 1.15. Laptops are provided.

Drama Club

Mrs Brett is on a course on Monday 12th January, so the club will not run. It will be back as normal on Monday 19th January.

Library

Our library lessons are based around storytelling and so our Book of the Week is the wildly mythical and magical book Edge of the Silver Sea by Alex Mullarky. Blair’s parents have uprooted her from everything she knows and moved their family to a falling-down house on a remote Scottish island. Blair is furious and desperate to find a way back to her old home. So when she meets a strange woman out in the island’s wilderness who promises to grant Blair’s wish, Blair grabs at the chance.  It's only after she says yes that Blair realises she’s entered into a dangerous fey bargain. Blair must undertake three apparently impossible tasks set by Cailleach; when and only when she succeeds in these tasks will her wish be granted.  A copy is available in the library now!

You can follow us on Instagram @art_mosslands to see some fabulous examples of the work produced by our students.

Reporting an Absence

Parents must telephone the school attendance line (0151 638 8131, option 1) on the first day of absence before 8.45am and on each subsequent day of absence. Alternatively, you can email attendance@mosslands.wirral.sch.uk. Please do not use the admin@mosslands email or the contact school option on the My Child at School app as these do not go directly to attendance, and you may still get a truancy call. It is our duty to keep your child safe, so if you do not inform us, you will receive a truancy call. You will receive 6 further calls until you respond.  The number which will display as an incoming call is a Sheffield number, 0114 303 4042.

If a student arrives at school after 9:15 AM, when the registers officially close, their late arrival is recorded as a U code. This code means the child is present on site, but too late to receive a present mark — and as such, it is recorded as an unauthorised absence.

Please be aware that repeated U codes can lead to further action, as they affect your child’s overall attendance percentage and may be subject to monitoring.

We understand that occasional lateness can happen for a variety of reasons. If you are experiencing difficulties that are impacting punctuality, please don’t hesitate to contact us so we can work together to support you.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support in ensuring your child attends school on time every day.

Please be advised that if a student is absent from school for two unauthorised consecutive days then a member of the pastoral team will contact home via telephone and after three unauthorised consecutive days, a member of staff will carry out a home visit to check that everything is okay, even if a phone call has already been received from a parent or carer.

This is part of our commitment to safeguarding and ensuring the wellbeing of all our students. We appreciate your understanding and support in this matter.

Medication in School

If you have any questions or concerns regarding medication in school, please contact the SEND Department. Students should not bring medication into school and any medication should be registered at reception. If your child is diagnosed as being asthmatic, following on from medical guidelines, please ensure they have an inhaler on them at all times and that we hold a spare within school. Many thanks.
