A Message from Mr. Whiteley

There are a few notices that I would like to bring to your attention.

Firstly, it is parents' evening tonight for Y12 & 13. Any parents who are yet to make appointments, please just turn up, and our teachers will make time to see you whenever they can. It runs from 4 to 6.45pm.

For all students who have been involved in the January exams, I wish you the best of luck and thank you for your excellent efforts.

The school ski trip departs for Italy on Saturday morning. It is exciting to think that our young people will be sharing the slopes with Olympians, who will be preparing for the Winter Olympics taking place in the same resort in just two weeks’ time. We are sure they will have a wonderful experience.

Parents of children on the ski trip are asked to keep an eye out for updates regarding pick-up arrangements. As traffic conditions on the M6 can be unpredictable, we will send out details once we are approximately one hour away.

There has been rapid progress since the builders commenced work at the beginning of January.  The new staff car park is expected to be completed next week, and we will be contacting you over the coming days to talk about entrance and exits from the school during this next phase of construction.  Hopefully, the groundworks along Mosslands Drive, which are currently establishing a pavement and access to the relocated cycle path, will also be finished by the end of January.

As you will be aware, Mosslands Drive is currently experiencing significant congestion. Until this preliminary work is completed, we ask that you make every effort to avoid driving along the road and/or parking close to the school.

There will be regular community meetings to update our neighbours and other interested parties, starting from the end of February.  Any questions you have about the build will be addressed through those meetings.  We are all very excited about this build project and the fantastic new community facility that we are investing in.

Ski Trip

The ski trip departs for Italy on Saturday 24th January. Students must meet at school by 10.45.

Careers Fair

This will take place on Tuesday 27th January in school. Years 9, 11 and 6th form will be able to meet a variety of employers, universities and vocational colleges.

Geography Fieldwork

A level geographers visited the area around the new Everton stadium this week to look at the impact it has had on the surrounding area. The data they collected will be used as part of their coursework.

Library

Our library lessons are currently honouring Holocaust Memorial Day and our Book of the Week is the beautifully told story of Yossi, Leo and Mordecai, who are among three hundred children who arrive in the English Lake District in the summer of 1945. Having survived the horrors of the Nazi concentration camps, they’ve finally reached a place of safety and peace, where they can hopefully begin to recover. Will life by the beautiful Lake Windermere be enough to bring hope back into all their lives?  A copy of After The War: from Auschwitz to Ambleside is available in the library now!

The author of this book and many more, Tom Palmer, will be visiting our school on Thursday 12th February and working with a selection of Year 7 and 8 students who have read his historical novel Resist as part of our Tutor Read Aloud program or have shown dedication to reading and the library so far this year. All students are welcome to come and meet Tom during breaktime in the library on this day and can buy a signed copy of his book for £6 cash.

Reporting an Absence

Parents must telephone the school attendance line (0151 638 8131, option 1) on the first day of absence before 8.45am and on each subsequent day of absence. Alternatively, you can email attendance@mosslands.wirral.sch.uk. Please do not use the admin@mosslands email or the contact school option on the My Child at School app as these do not go directly to attendance, and you may still get a truancy call. It is our duty to keep your child safe, so if you do not inform us, you will receive a truancy call. You will receive 6 further calls until you respond.  The number which will display as an incoming call is a Sheffield number, 0114 303 4042.

If a student arrives at school after 9:15 AM, when the registers officially close, their late arrival is recorded as a U code. This code means the child is present on site, but too late to receive a present mark — and as such, it is recorded as an unauthorised absence.

Please be aware that repeated U codes can lead to further action, as they affect your child’s overall attendance percentage and may be subject to monitoring.

We understand that occasional lateness can happen for a variety of reasons. If you are experiencing difficulties that are impacting punctuality, please don’t hesitate to contact us so we can work together to support you.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support in ensuring your child attends school on time every day.

Please be advised that if a student is absent from school for two unauthorised consecutive days then a member of the pastoral team will contact home via telephone and after three unauthorised consecutive days, a member of staff will carry out a home visit to check that everything is okay, even if a phone call has already been received from a parent or carer.

This is part of our commitment to safeguarding and ensuring the wellbeing of all our students. We appreciate your understanding and support in this matter.

Medication in School

If you have any questions or concerns regarding medication in school, please contact the SEND Department. Students should not bring medication into school and any medication should be registered at reception. If your child is diagnosed as being asthmatic, following on from medical guidelines, please ensure they have an inhaler on them at all times and that we hold a spare within school. Many thanks.
