Year 10 Parents' Evening

This event is starting at 4pm tonight. If you have not made any appointments, but are prepared to wait to see staff when they have space, please come along.

Y9 Vaccinations

Today is the last day for you to give consent or not for the vaccinations being held next week. It is important for parents to register a no consent if that is their wish.

Exams Next Week

There are a couple of exams affecting Y11 next week.

Food tech students will be doing their practical exams one day next week from Monday to Thursday. If your son was due to do his practical on Wednesday with Ms Rowe, please ask him to check the time of his exam, as some boys have been moved to Thursday.

MFL students have their mock speaking tests on Tuesday in AX block.

Y10 sports students were due to sit a controlled assessment on Monday, but this has been moved to Monday 23rd March.

Y13 Environmental Science Fieldwork

Students have been involved in a joint project with Liverpool John Moores University and Mersey River Trust. As part of this project, we have been rearing 150 trout eggs. The eggs have now hatched, and we will be attending the release of the trout fry on Tuesday. The trout will be released into the River Bollin, Wilmslow. The project will support the A level environmental science curriculum, specifically focusing on conservation of native species in the UK.

Val di Fiemme Ski Trip: A Week to Remember ⛷️

Last week, a group of students from years 7 to 13 travelled to the stunning Val di Fiemme in Italy for what proved to be an outstanding and unforgettable school ski trip.

Led by Mr Murray (Assistant Headteacher for Personal Development), and supported by Mr Whiteley (Headteacher), alongside Mr Wood, Mr Taylor and Mr Power, the trip combined exceptional skiing conditions, cultural experiences and fantastic opportunities for personal development.

Val di Fiemme is made up of three distinct ski areas, all of which the group explored across the week. Students skied at Pampeago on days 1 and 4, Bellamonte on days 2 and 3, and Alp Cermis on the final day. Conditions were quite simply the best seen in the resort for over a decade, with excellent snow and plenty of deep powder, providing both challenge and excitement – and, inevitably, a few laughs and tumbles along the way.

The group was split into four ski groups: two beginner groups, one intermediate and one advanced. Many of the intermediate and advanced skiers had attended the previous school ski trip to Austria in 2025, and it was fantastic to see the progress they had made. The sixth form students, in particular, were exemplary role models throughout the week, supporting younger pupils both on and off the slopes.

Despite the inevitable knocks that come with a demanding week of skiing, injuries were managed exceptionally well by experienced staff, allowing students to continue developing their technique on nursery slopes before being reintegrated into lessons. A real highlight came on the final day, when every single student was skiing – a brilliant achievement and a testament to the resilience and support shown across the group.

Away from the slopes, the accommodation played a huge part in the success of the trip. The four-star hotel offered excellent facilities, including a high-quality buffet restaurant with a wide range of food choices and its own swimming pool. Students enjoyed private access to the pool on two evenings, one of which featured an unforgettable water polo match between KS3/KS4 and the sixth form, refereed by Mr Murray. In a thrilling contest, the younger students edged a dramatic 10–9 victory!

Other evening highlights included a private cinema experience, which provided a calm and relaxed change of pace, and an authentic pizza night in town. A walk around Cavalese on Thursday allowed students to explore the local area, pick up souvenirs and prepare for the long coach journey home.

Thursday was also awards day. Students received ski awards and medals following the morning slalom races, before a series of awards celebrated achievements such as Best Skier and Best Rooms. Room inspections throughout the week were themed – sport, Italy and Winter Olympics – and students embraced the challenge with enthusiasm, creativity and music (including a memorable rendition of the Italian national anthem).

Mr Murray also took bragging rights by winning the staff ski race – a result that has already become part of school folklore.

Most importantly, the week highlighted the character of our students. It was fantastic to see how the boys developed in confidence, independence and teamwork, mixing across year groups and supporting one another throughout the trip. They were a real credit to themselves, their families and the school.

Following the success of this trip, plans are already underway to build on the experience next year, with opportunities for both more experienced skiers and complete beginners to take part.

A truly exceptional week – one that will be remembered for a very long time.

Careers Fair

Last week, we had our annual careers fair and years 9, 11 and sixth form had the opportunity to meet a number of employers, FE, HE and training providers. It was a successful day and visitors commented on how engaged the students were.

Our thanks go to: Liverpool John Moores University, Edge Hill University, Wrexham University, Wirral Metropolitan College, Coleg Cambria, National Horseracing College, TTE, LIPA, Willmott Dixon (our new build contractors), Wirral Borough Council, North West Ambulance Service, Pilgrim Foods and The British Army.

Year 10 Work Experience

We continue to support Y10 students who do not yet have a confirmed work placement and a letter was sent to Y10 parents this week.

If your son's placement is confirmed, please check the details on Unifrog, particularly if specific footwear or clothing is required.

If your son's placement is not confirmed, please ask them to check on Unifrog and contact the employer if necessary. Please also check that the parental consent has been completed.

All but a handful of boys have been seen and supported with contacts if they did not have their own. Please help us by encouraging them to contact these employers by phone, email, letter or in person.

Once placements are confirmed, parents of students in receipt of FSM will be sent a link to request vouchers for the 2 weeks.

Any issues, please contact Mrs Rycroft, Careers Leader.

Art Department

Miss Frost held our incredibly popular Mini Bob Ross Day. We had over 50 Y9 boys put their names down for it, but unfortunately we only had room for 15.

All work is entered into Merseyside's dot-art Schools competition.

We have some big surprises for our main Bob Ross Day in July, so if students are interested, they should express their interest with their art teacher.

Library

Author Tom Palmer will be visiting our school on Thursday 12th February and working with a selection of Y7 and 8 students who have read his historical novel Resist as part of our Tutor Read Aloud program or have shown dedication to reading and the library so far this year. All students are welcome to come and meet Tom during breaktime in the library on this day.

In honour of Children's Mental Health Week whose theme is 'This is My Place', our Book of the Week Zohra Nabi's The Kingdom Over the Sea which follows Yara as she searches for her place in the magical world of Zehairia - a place not on the map, a city of sorcerers, alchemists and magic. A copy is available in the library now.

Well done to Y9 Ruskin boys Chris and Marshall, who have both read 101 Manga books since September! Their dedication to reading is outstanding.

Reporting an Absence

Parents must telephone the school attendance line (0151 638 8131, option 1) on the first day of absence before 8.45am and on each subsequent day of absence. Alternatively, you can email attendance@mosslands.wirral.sch.uk. Please do not use the admin@mosslands email or the contact school option on the My Child at School app as these do not go directly to attendance, and you may still get a truancy call. It is our duty to keep your child safe, so if you do not inform us, you will receive a truancy call. You will receive 6 further calls until you respond.  The number which will display as an incoming call is a Sheffield number, 0114 303 4042.

If a student arrives at school after 9:15 AM, when the registers officially close, their late arrival is recorded as a U code. This code means the child is present on site, but too late to receive a present mark — and as such, it is recorded as an unauthorised absence.

Please be aware that repeated U codes can lead to further action, as they affect your child’s overall attendance percentage and may be subject to monitoring.

We understand that occasional lateness can happen for a variety of reasons. If you are experiencing difficulties that are impacting punctuality, please don’t hesitate to contact us so we can work together to support you.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support in ensuring your child attends school on time every day.

Please be advised that if a student is absent from school for two unauthorised consecutive days then a member of the pastoral team will contact home via telephone and after three unauthorised consecutive days, a member of staff will carry out a home visit to check that everything is okay, even if a phone call has already been received from a parent or carer.

This is part of our commitment to safeguarding and ensuring the wellbeing of all our students. We appreciate your understanding and support in this matter.

Medication in School

If you have any questions or concerns regarding medication in school, please contact the SEND Department. Students should not bring medication into school and any medication should be registered at reception. If your child is diagnosed as being asthmatic, following on from medical guidelines, please ensure they have an inhaler on them at all times and that we hold a spare within school. Many thanks.
