Message from Mr Whiteley

As you might have been told by your sons, last week, we welcomed five visitors into our school as part of a 3-day Challenge Partners review. This is similar to an inspection, led by an inspector alongside trained senior staff from schools across the country. Our team included a broad range of schools from Leicester, Stoke, Somerset, Liverpool, and Wirral. The programme not only makes observations about the quality of our school, but also acts as a vehicle for sharing good practice and giving support. Their feedback was overwhelmingly positive and is summarised below:

The school is strongly committed to its values of care, commitment and challenge, which are reflected in its calm, safe and supportive environment. Leaders have prioritised building strong relationships with students and families, creating clear routines, and ensuring students feel listened to and valued. There is a clear focus on students’ future success, with a well-developed careers programme, opportunities for enrichment, and strong pastoral support, including mental health provision and tailored programmes in the “Thrive” specialist resource base and adapted provision suite. Students speak positively about their experiences, particularly the emphasis on respect, personal development and having a voice in school life.

Teaching has a clear focus on challenge, strong subject knowledge, and improving students’ recall and understanding through the school’s teaching framework. Reading support and attendance strategies are having a measurable impact.

Inclusion remains central to the school’s work, with effective support for disadvantaged students and those with additional needs through coordinated pastoral care and targeted interventions.

Moving forward, the school aims to further stretch students’ learning, strengthen extended writing skills, and ensure all groups continue to make stronger academic progress while maintaining high levels of engagement in enrichment opportunities.

Finally, I am delighted by the number of Y11 students attending the exam preparation sessions before and after school. Please encourage your son to get involved if he is not already doing so. This excellent year group has the potential to do really well in these exams, so any encouragement and praise you can give would be greatly appreciated in these last few days and weeks before the exams start.

The boys all have their own personal exam timetable. There is also one on the school website. Some exams have already taken place with the major exams in English, maths and science, starting the week after next on 11th May. This exam season is longer than in previous years, so we will continue teaching and supporting our Y11 students right through this phase of their term.

If your son is in Y11 and has not yet secured a guarantee of a course, job or apprenticeship for next year or has changed his mind about an offer he has been given, please get in touch, and we will support him to find a positive destination.

Science Department

We’re proud to share our journey with Science Mastery, which has transformed the way we use assessment to support learning across our science department.

By embedding diagnostic questions, exit tickets and mastery quizzes into everyday teaching, our team can now spot misconceptions early and respond with precision. This shift towards truly responsive teaching has helped us strengthen consistency, deepen subject understanding and secure a six‑year upward trend in student outcomes.

A huge thank you to our partners at Ark Curriculum Plus for the ongoing guidance, CPD and subject‑specialist support. Read the full case study here: https://bit.ly/4tEl3cz

Library

In honour of Earth Day, which is on 22nd April each year, our Book of the Week is Wrath by Marcus Sedgwick. This dyslexia-friendly book is a suspenseful, gripping tale about teen life and relationships that explores our wavering connection to the world around us as protagonist Fitz tries to find Cassie, who has disappeared since hearing the noise of Earth in distress.

Reporting an Absence

Parents must telephone the school attendance line (0151 638 8131, option 1) on the first day of absence before 8.45am and on each subsequent day of absence. Alternatively, you can email attendance@mosslands.wirral.sch.uk. Please do not use the admin@mosslands email or the contact school option on the My Child at School app as these do not go directly to attendance, and you may still get a truancy call. It is our duty to keep your child safe, so if you do not inform us, you will receive a truancy call. You will receive 6 further calls until you respond.  The number which will display as an incoming call is a Sheffield number, 0114 303 4042.

If a student arrives at school after 9:15 AM, when the registers officially close, their late arrival is recorded as a U code. This code means the child is present on site, but too late to receive a present mark — and as such, it is recorded as an unauthorised absence.

Please be aware that repeated U codes can lead to further action, as they affect your child’s overall attendance percentage and may be subject to monitoring.

We understand that occasional lateness can happen for a variety of reasons. If you are experiencing difficulties that are impacting punctuality, please don’t hesitate to contact us so we can work together to support you.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support in ensuring your child attends school on time every day.

Please be advised that if a student is absent from school for two unauthorised consecutive days then a member of the pastoral team will contact home via telephone and after three unauthorised consecutive days, a member of staff will carry out a home visit to check that everything is okay, even if a phone call has already been received from a parent or carer.

This is part of our commitment to safeguarding and ensuring the wellbeing of all our students. We appreciate your understanding and support in this matter.

Medication in School

If you have any questions or concerns regarding medication in school, please contact the SEND Department. Students should not bring medication into school and any medication should be registered at reception. If your child is diagnosed as being asthmatic, following on from medical guidelines, please ensure they have an inhaler on them at all times and that we hold a spare within school. Many thanks.
