To all parents of students in Y11, I would like to pass on my thanks and congratulations on the way they have approached and conducted themselves throughout this exam series.  Clearing Day on Wednesday was a really uplifting event with a genuine sense of warmth and care on display from the staff and pupils alike.  For those who are not returning to us for 6th form, I wish them the very best of luck in all of their future endeavours. They will always be welcome visitors.  A reminder that their examination results will be published for collection on Thursday 20th August from 9am.  If you are not able to come in to collect them in person, please contact the school, and we can arrange to post them out to you.

For our students in Y13, I look forward to bidding them farewell on Friday afternoon.  They have been a tremendous group of outstanding young men, and it has been a pleasure watching them develop over the past 7 years.

For students in Y10, I wish them every success in their examinations which start on Monday.  This is their first formal set of exams and during the week, they will only be expected to attend for these examinations and the timetable shows late starts and early finishes.  Please ensure that boys are punctual for their examinations; attendance is compulsory, and school uniform must be worn.  Normal lessons for Y10 resume on Friday 26th June.

For students in years 7–9, there will be a series of objective tests to go alongside their subject assessments. These will help inform grouping and setting for next year.  You will receive a full report on these assessments before the end of term.

In other news, I am delighted that at last the new school building is sprouting out of the ground.  Over the next few months, it will be much easier to see the shape and scale of the new building as the steelworks take shape.  Our Y10 students have already undertaken a number of visits to the site and those opting to study construction next year will have that privilege over the coming months.  I apologise for any inconvenience that this is causing for our neighbours as there is an increase in traffic on Mosslands Drive and some further traffic measures are being enforced.  Wherever possible, parents dropping children off should avoid Mosslands Drive.

A reminder that school will close early on Wednesday in order for us to prepare for our open evening.

Introducing Our New Generation Juice Drinks Hubs!

We are delighted to announce that from September, we are launching an exciting new chilled drinks concept in the school dining hall to massively reduce our single-use plastic waste and promote healthy hydration.

Did you know that our school community currently goes through an estimated 1,000 single-use plastic bottles every single day? Over a standard school year, that adds up to a staggering 190,000 bottles going to recycling or landfill from our site alone.

We have partnered with Generation Juice to install new interactive Drinks Hubs. These modern, touch-screen dispensers freshly mix and flash-chill delicious fruit and water-flavour fusions directly into the students' own bottles.

Free Eco-Bottle for Every Student!

To kickstart this green initiative, the school is providing every single student with a free, high-quality, reusable Generation Juice bottle.  By giving every student their own bottle, we are eliminating single-use plastics from our dining halls.  Use of the drinks dispensers will be integrated into the existing payment system.

As well as the new juice dispensers, we will be installing new mains water chillers for students to fill their reusable bottles with ice-cold, filtered drinking water completely free of charge.

GL Assessments — Years 7, 8 and 9

Students in years 7, 8 and 9 will be completing their annual GL Assessments from Monday 22nd June to Wednesday 1st July. During this time, your son/ward will sit three assessments in total — one each in English, maths and science — alongside their form group. These are online assessments that take place in school and are a normal part of our academic assessment calendar.

There is nothing to worry about and no revision or preparation is required — students simply need to come to school ready to try their best. Each assessment takes approximately one hour, and students are given additional time if needed.

Attendance during this period is crucial, and we would ask for your support in ensuring your son/ward is in school on time each day. We really do appreciate your help with this.

Students will be informed of their individual test times by their form tutor.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.

CGI Young Dreamers Competition

21 of our amazing Y8 students headed to Aintree Racecourse on 4th June, for the regional finals of the CGI Young Dreamers Competition 2026.  The CGI Young Dreamers programme gives students the opportunity to work on key skills such as teamwork, research and presenting, while having fun using STEM skills.  Representing Mosslands across 4 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) teams, they had to pitch their innovative tech ideas to a panel of real-world industry judges.

The CGI Young Dreamers programme connects students aged 12–14 from underserved communities with real-world STEM challenges, mentoring from professionals, and hands-on experiences to explore future careers. The initiative is designed to promote social mobility and help young people understand how science, technology, engineering and mathematics can shape the world around them.

Huge congratulations to our engineering team for winning their section.  Every student who attended the event was a credit to Mosslands, displaying interest, enthusiasm, courage and patience on the day.  Well done to all involved.

Bob Ross Day

Students were invited to submit a piece of artwork for the chance to earn a place on our incredibly popular Bob Ross Day.

The successful students spent the day off timetable creating their own paintings, enjoying a relaxed and creative atmosphere, and of course, a few sweet treats along the way!

This year, prints of each painting will be produced and sold to staff and the wider community, with all proceeds going to a local charity chosen by the students.  Eight of the artworks will be selected, and will be in the Floral Pavilion exhibition over the summer.

Well done to everyone who took part and showcased their artistic talent!

Drama

Last Friday, our Y12 drama cohort: Jack, Logan and Leo performed their exam piece. Taken from Lyle Kessler's play Orphans, their performance resulted in a standing ovation and tears all round for this highly charged, emotional piece. It was wonderful to see some of our old Y11 returning to the studio to support the cast. Mrs Brett is incredibly proud of what these three young men have achieved with this challenging performance.

Selected Y8 drama pupils took part in a special effects workshop with Mrs Brett and Miss Rowe, who teamed up again to give the pupils the experience of applying make-up, bruising and wounds to enhance a scripted performance scene. The pupils fully involved themselves in the workshop, and it was a pleasure to see them perform their scenes.

Library

Our Book of the Week is Refugee Boy by Benjamin Zephaniah. An honest, wry and poignant story of a young refugee left in London by his father that is even more powerful and pertinent today than when it was first published. Available in the library now.

The ability to experience and understand other people's feelings and points of view is incredibly important and there is no better way than honouring Empathy Day, which took place on Friday 12th June.  Our library is a huge advocate for developing our empathy skills and there is no better way than through reading. Here are some of our favourite books from @theempathylab book collections.

Reporting an Absence

Parents must telephone the school attendance line (0151 638 8131, option 1) on the first day of absence before 8.45am and on each subsequent day of absence. Alternatively, you can email attendance@mosslands.wirral.sch.uk. Please do not use the admin@mosslands email or the contact school option on the My Child at School app as these do not go directly to attendance, and you may still get a truancy call. It is our duty to keep your child safe, so if you do not inform us, you will receive a truancy call. You will receive 6 further calls until you respond.  The number which will display as an incoming call is a Sheffield number, 0114 303 4042.

If a student arrives at school after 9:15 AM, when the registers officially close, their late arrival is recorded as a U code. This code means the child is present on site, but too late to receive a present mark — and as such, it is recorded as an unauthorised absence.

Please be aware that repeated U codes can lead to further action, as they affect your child’s overall attendance percentage and may be subject to monitoring.

We understand that occasional lateness can happen for a variety of reasons. If you are experiencing difficulties that are impacting punctuality, please don’t hesitate to contact us so we can work together to support you.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support in ensuring your child attends school on time every day.

Please be advised that if a student is absent from school for two unauthorised consecutive days then a member of the pastoral team will contact home via telephone and after three unauthorised consecutive days, a member of staff will carry out a home visit to check that everything is okay, even if a phone call has already been received from a parent or carer.

This is part of our commitment to safeguarding and ensuring the wellbeing of all our students. We appreciate your understanding and support in this matter.

Medication in School

If you have any questions or concerns regarding medication in school, please contact the SEND Department. Students should not bring medication into school and any medication should be registered at reception. If your child is diagnosed as being asthmatic, following on from medical guidelines, please ensure they have an inhaler on them at all times and that we hold a spare within school. Many thanks.
