Beyond Mosslands – Find Your Thing

What could your son discover beyond the school day?

We are pleased to share our new Beyond Mosslands – Find Your Thing guide, created to help students and families explore clubs, activities and opportunities available in the local area. The guide does not claim to include every club available, but it brings together a wide range of options that may help boys discover a new interest, develop a skill, meet new people or continue something they already enjoy.

The guide is organised into easy-to-browse sections covering sport and physical activity, youth clubs and social activities, drama, music and creativity, coding and skills, cadets and leadership, and inclusive/life-skills opportunities. Opportunities range from football, rugby and swimming to martial arts, music, drama, gaming, volunteering, Scouts, Cadets and much more.

Each listing gives practical information such as age, day and time, location, cost, what the activity involves, how to make contact and the provider’s website. In the attached digital PDF, the website addresses are clickable, so families can go directly to the relevant organisation to check the latest information, availability and joining arrangements.

This guide is intended to complement the enrichment opportunities we offer at Mosslands. We want boys to recognise that opportunities to get involved, challenge themselves and build character do not stop at the school gate.

Open the attached guide with your son and have a look together. He may just find his thing.

Library

We're back! The library is fully open, and all students are welcome throughout the day. We open at 8am for those students who would like a little quiet before school and every day during break and lunch for chess, Lego, board games and a spot of reading.

The theme of our Y7 and 8 library lessons is banned books, and we are discussing the various reasons that books have been banned in this country and others. We will be focusing on Lord of The Flies by William Goulding, which ranks as one of the most frequently challenged and banned books for the American Library Association. We will be discussing the freedom to read and whether book banning should happen.

The Scholastic Book Fair will be arriving at Mosslands on Monday 28^th September and students will have the opportunity to browse and buy books throughout the week. Parents and carers can purchase books online during this week and students can pay by card or cash. For every book purchased we earn free books for our school.

Trips

The third deposit for the Rome trip on MCAS and is due by 16^th September. The balance is now also available on MCAS for anyone who would like to start paying off the remaining balance.

Any students in Y7 who wish to join the ski trip to Austria in January 2027 can now access the deposit in the trips section of MCAS. Once you have paid the deposit, you will be added to the balance, which can also be found in the trips section. Any students in Y12 who would like to join the trip should speak to Mr Murray.

Charity News

Last term, our ice cream sales raised £1,002.11, the largest amount raised since we began selling ice creams in 2022. 

The money has been divided between the following charities: Save the Children Fund, Fire Fighters, The Trussell Trust, Koala North West and Tam O'Shanter Farm.

We have now raised a total of £7,065.89.  Well done to all concerned.

Reporting an Absence 

Parents must telephone the school attendance line (0151 638 8131, option 1) on the first day of absence before 8.45am and on each subsequent day of absence. Alternatively, you can email attendance@mosslands.wirral.sch.uk. Please do not use the admin@mosslands email or the contact school option on the My Child at School app as these do not go directly to attendance, and you may still get a truancy call. It is our duty to keep your child safe, so if you do not inform us, you will receive a truancy call. You will receive 6 further calls until you respond.  The number which will display as an incoming call is a Sheffield number, 0114 303 4042.

If a student arrives at school after 9:15 AM, when the registers officially close, their late arrival is recorded as a U code. This code means the child is present on site, but too late to receive a present mark — and as such, it is recorded as an unauthorised absence.

Please be aware that repeated U codes can lead to further action, as they affect your child’s overall attendance percentage and may be subject to monitoring.

We understand that occasional lateness can happen for a variety of reasons. If you are experiencing difficulties that are impacting punctuality, please don’t hesitate to contact us so we can work together to support you.

Please be advised that if a student is absent from school for two unauthorised consecutive days then a member of the pastoral team will contact home via telephone and after three unauthorised consecutive days, a member of staff will carry out a home visit to check that everything is okay, even if a phone call has already been received from a parent or carer.  

This is part of our commitment to safeguarding and ensuring the wellbeing of all our students. We appreciate your understanding and support in this matter.

Medication in School

If you have any questions or concerns regarding medication in school, please contact the SEND Department. Students should not bring medication into school and any medication should be registered at reception. If your child is diagnosed as being asthmatic, following on from medical guidelines, please ensure they have an inhaler on them at all times and that we hold a spare within school.
