I would like to bid a warm welcome to our new Year 7s. Although sometimes the step into secondary school can be an anxious time for parents and children, I am happy to say that our new cohort has settled down very quickly and are coping with the transition between specialist classrooms and the larger environment admirably.
This has been a very busy start to the new school year, and I am pleased with the way that the older students have settled down to their studies. This is especially important for those students in years 10 and 11 as they face the pressures of GCSE courses.
As you will know, we received a visit from Ofsted inspectors this week and I would like to thank all the parents for the overwhelmingly positive feedback on the parental questionnaires that we sent out. Although I am unable to share the outcomes of the inspection with you until the report is published some time in October, I am pleased to say that they recognised the progress that the school has made in recent years in all aspects of its provision and that they made reference to excellent behaviour and the school's calm working environment. I will share the report with you as soon as I am able. I would like to commend the boys for the way that they conducted themselves during the inspection and for the positivity they showed when being spoken to by the inspecting team. This report comes on the back of the regional improvement team's report in the summer term where they described the school as a "beacon of good practice."
Elsewhere, construction of the new build continues to pick up pace. The building is currently slightly ahead of schedule, meaning that we are likely to move to the new site in autumn next year. Please be aware of the increased traffic and heavy vehicles using the road and, if at all possible, do not pick up/drop off students at the school gates as this causes blockages in the road, which in turn makes crossing the road dangerous for our children.
For pupils coming to school on bikes, could parents please reinforce the message about riding sensibly and not riding on footpaths where there are clearly visible "No Cycling" signs. For Y7 students, cycling proficiency courses will run in due course. We recommend that all children who ride a bike to school wear a helmet.
Thanks for all your support in the provision of drinks under the new framework for removing single-use plastics from our school. The new drinks system seems to be very popular with students and although there were some queues at first, these are dying down as pupils get used to using the machines.
A reminder that next Thursday, 24th September, school will finish at 2.30pm to allow us to prepare for our open evening.
