Year 7 Meet the Form Tutor

Parents of students in Y7 will shortly receive emails inviting them to this event next Thursday, 8th October. It is an opportunity to meet form tutors and discuss how well pupils are settling in.

🚀 Space Week at Mosslands!

We’re celebrating World Space Week (4–10 October) with lots of exciting activities across school!

Students can take part in our Mission to Mars Library Trail, with completed entries being placed into a raffle, and test their knowledge with our daily Space Question of the Day.

Our Year 7 pupils will also get the chance to experience a planetarium in school. On Friday, we welcome STEM Ambassador Francis Coop, who will be talking about “The Apollo Moon Landings – Did They Really Happen? 1969–1972”.

Francis has spent over 20 years working with schools as a STEM Ambassador, project mentor and STEM project judge. A graduate engineer, he has worked with major UK companies, including Philips Electronics and Mars Foods. He is passionate about science and engineering and inspiring young people to explore STEM through curiosity and imagination.

To finish the week, students will be creating “Messages to the Future” – sharing what they think future generations should know about life on Earth in 2026. 🌍🚀

Careers

On Wednesday, our Year 8 students will take part in an exciting Enterprise Challenge workshop delivered by The Talent Foundry.

During the 2-hour workshop, students will be given the opportunity to develop employability skills, including teamwork, resilience and communication, whilst working collaboratively to solve a realistic workplace challenge. It promises to be an engaging opportunity for students to see how the skills they develop in school can be applied to the world of work.

Library

The Scholastic Book Fair is here and students will have the opportunity to browse and buy books until Friday! For every book purchased, we earn free books for our school library, so please encourage your child to purchase a book. Students can pay by QR code, cash or online and parents and carers can purchase books online during this week by using this link: https://bookfairs.scholastic.co.uk/pay/88731536

Our library lesson theme is National Poetry Week. In the spotlight is a collection of poems by Michael Rosen and Hot Poets called Wonder Thunder Blunder featuring poems all about our planet.

Cadet Camp

We are incredibly proud of our cadets following their fantastic two-day trip to Inskip Camp last week! Taking part in a brilliant range of outdoor activities, this was the largest group of students we have ever sent to camp. Every single cadet conducted themselves impeccably, serving as exceptional ambassadors and a true credit to The Mosslands School. A massive thank you goes to Mr Fox for his tireless dedication and hard work in making this unforgettable experience possible for our cadets.

New York Trip

On Tuesday, the boys on the New York trip took part in a sponsored walk to raise money for sports kit for the tour. Sponsor money can be paid in via the MCAS app.

Winter Illness and Attendance

As coughs and colds become more common, please remember that NHS guidance says children can usually attend school with a mild cough, cold, sore throat or headache if they are otherwise well and do not have a high temperature.

If your son is well enough to come in, please send him in — we will look after him.

If you are still unsure, you can read the NHS Is my child too ill for school? guidance or watch this short DfE animation on Illness absence and staying healthy

Please contact us if attendance is becoming difficult for any reason. Our pastoral and A2E teams are here to help.

Flu Vaccinations

The Immunisation Team will be in school on Monday 23rd November to offer flu vaccinations to eligible students. Parents/carers will receive a separate email directly from the team with an electronic consent form, so please keep an eye on your inbox and complete the form when it arrives.

You can follow us on Instagram @art_mosslands to see some fabulous examples of the work produced by our students.

Reporting an Absence

Parents must telephone the school attendance line (0151 638 8131, option 1) on the first day of absence before 8.45am and on each subsequent day of absence. Alternatively, you can email attendance@mosslands.wirral.sch.uk. Please do not use the admin@mosslands email or the contact school option on the My Child at School app as these do not go directly to attendance, and you may still get a truancy call. It is our duty to keep your child safe, so if you do not inform us, you will receive a truancy call. You will receive 6 further calls until you respond.  The number which will display as an incoming call is a Sheffield number, 0114 303 4042.

If a student arrives at school after 9:15 AM, when the registers officially close, their late arrival is recorded as a U code. This code means the child is present on site, but too late to receive a present mark — and as such, it is recorded as an unauthorised absence.

Please be aware that repeated U codes can lead to further action, as they affect your child’s overall attendance percentage and may be subject to monitoring.

We understand that occasional lateness can happen for a variety of reasons. If you are experiencing difficulties that are impacting punctuality, please don’t hesitate to contact us so we can work together to support you.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support in ensuring your child attends school on time every day.

Please be advised that if a student is absent from school for two unauthorised consecutive days then a member of the pastoral team will contact home via telephone and after three unauthorised consecutive days, a member of staff will carry out a home visit to check that everything is okay, even if a phone call has already been received from a parent or carer.

This is part of our commitment to safeguarding and ensuring the wellbeing of all our students. We appreciate your understanding and support in this matter.

Medication in School

If you have any questions or concerns regarding medication in school, please contact the SEND Department. Students should not bring medication into school and any medication should be registered at reception. If your child is diagnosed as being asthmatic, following on from medical guidelines, please ensure they have an inhaler on them at all times and that we hold a spare within school. Many thanks.
