Merseyside Boccia Tournament

Three of our boys represented Mosslands at the Merseyside Schools Boccia competition for children with a physical disability.

Boccia tournament flyerThree of our boys represented Mosslands at the Merseyside Schools Boccia competition on Monday 12th November 2012 at the Greenbank Sports Academy in Liverpool for children with a physical disability. The aims of the competition were to identify talented players and to provide information on existing clubs and encourage the development of new clubs.

Many schools from across Merseyside attended with the Wirral represented by teams from Hilbre and Woodchurch.

We played three matches in our group. We beat Lansbury Bridge A in a closely fought contest 8v5 before squeezing past St Vincents C in an even tighter match 5v3.  By now the lads were in their groove. Tactics and strategy were now all they talked about, winning was in our sights! The last match of the group saw everything come together in a comprehensive win against Bluebell Park A. Mosslands winning the match 12v4.

Boccia team matesThese three results meant we had topped our group and progressed to the semi-finals.

To our amazement, the semi-finals consisted of three teams from Broadgreen and ourselves. Broadgreen are renowned for their time playing and perfecting the game of Boccia so our lads knew they were up against it. We were 6v4 down going into the final end and needed at least 2 points to take the game into extra ends. It was so tight, the tape measure was out and all eyes were on this match! Unfortunately with the last ball of the game still vital, we could only manage one point and so lost out by the narrowest of margins 6v5.

Playing bocciaThe lads were fantastic and this just goes to show that with a little extra practice, just how good could we be!

As a result of reaching the semi-finals, our team, consisting of Sam Lloyd, Dan Lloyd and Matthew Crofts, were selected to go forward to represent Merseyside in the Lord Taverners Regional event taking place on Thursday 14th February 2013 at Greenbank Sports Academy. Subsequently there are squad places to be filled for the North West team that will compete in the National Championships in April 2013 in Sheffield.

A big thank you to the school for their support, thanks to Lesley Cubbin and of course a massive thank you and congratulations to the boys. Well done!
