On Wednesday 2nd July year 11 students who have recently finished their GCSEs gathered for the re-scheduled expedition which had been postponed in April due to smog! During the journey whilst tackling the winding roads through the hills several shouts of “Hughie” were heard from the back of the bus – thanks to Jonno and Billy for the pleasant aroma produced! On arrival in the Yorkshire Dales they immediately set off to climb Whernside the 1st of the notorious “three peaks”. With finely tuned navigation skills they manoeuvred themselves and their weighty equipment across 18km of hill and dale. Two groups arrived bang on schedule at the lovely campsite in Ingleton whilst the third group took in slightly more scenery than was planned and arrived shortly before bedtime. In the meanwhile the obligatory game of football had been played.

After some had eaten breakfast the next morning the groups set off to climb Ingleborough. This was slightly more challenging as the weather conditions worsened and at the peak a rendition of “whistle a happy tune” from the King and I could be heard but the vocalist was hidden in the mist! Both students and staff were a credit to the school and speedily navigated their way to safety, the route was changed and the groups later met at Sell Gill Holes before heading to the second campsite for a well-deserved dinner and extra long sleep!

Friday saw a revised route, we couldn’t see Pen-y-Ghent to climb it! The now proven men hiked along the Ribble Way before departing for home on the 80s Disco Party Bus!

A big thank you to both students and staff involved in this adventure as it was thoroughly enjoyed and character forming for all!
