Aimhigher Transitions Day

Aimhigher (Greater Merseyside) along with the Astrophysics Research Institute (ARI) organized a  Spaceport activity day for 20 Year 9 students

Aimhigher (Greater Merseyside) along with the Astrophysics Research Institute (ARI) organized a  Spaceport activity day for 20 year 9 students Mosslands pupils, who are approaching a number of important academic and career decision points. We were also accompanied by 5 Aimhigher undergraduate mentors.

The group was split into four groups (A, B, C and D) and were attached to one Aimhigher undergraduate mentor. The groups undertook the following activities.

Timetable of the day

Solar System Quiz – the first zone in Spaceport investigates the Solar System. Groups were provided with an activity worksheet designed to build on their existing knowledge of the planets. Students were also be able to enjoy the use of the simulator as a reward for completing the activity worksheet. 

Domeshow – Students and staff enjoyed ‘We are Astronomers’ show, (narrated by David Tennant) lasting around 25 minutes, this focused on the work that Astronomers do and was very informative as well as really good visually in the dome space!. 

Activity – Students also undertook the National Schools Observatory ‘Hunting for Asteroids’ workshop, and which provided a brief snapshot of some of the work undertaken by astronomers. 

Exploring the Exhibition – is a chance for pupils to explore the remainder of Spaceport, including the downstairs Galaxy section and the upstairs Wallace and Gromit Exhibition, with a chance to draw and design a Robot or model one with plasticine
