English at The Mosslands School
At Mosslands, English is at the heart of our curriculum. All students study both English Language and English Literature, gaining a broad and balanced experience of reading, writing, and communication. From Year 7 onwards, students join a mixed ability group where they begin to develop the core skills that will support their success throughout school and beyond.
As students progress, their group may change to reflect their evolving strengths, ensuring the right level of support and challenge.
A Five-Year Learning Journey
Our English curriculum is carefully planned as a five-year programme from Year 7 through to Year 11. In the early years, students explore a wide range of literary and non-fiction texts, laying the foundations for the more advanced study of English in later years.
Throughout this journey, students will:
-
Read and explore a variety of classic and contemporary texts, including novels, plays, poetry, and real-world writing
-
Learn to write creatively and for purpose, whether crafting imaginative stories or presenting a clear, persuasive viewpoint
-
Develop the ability to analyse language and structure, building critical thinking and deeper understanding
-
Enhance their speaking and listening skills through discussion, presentation, and debate
Our Approach
We aim to nurture confident, curious, and articulate learners. English lessons are designed to build not just skills for exams, but lifelong abilities in communication, interpretation, and empathy. Our students become thoughtful readers and capable writers, able to express themselves clearly and effectively.
The key components of our English curriculum include:
-
Reading for Understanding – Developing the ability to read between the lines, identify themes, and evaluate the impact of a writer’s choices
-
Writing with Purpose – Learning how to write imaginatively and persuasively, adapting tone and style for different audiences
-
Speaking with Confidence – Building presentation and discussion skills that support self-expression and collaboration
-
Analytical Thinking – Exploring how texts reflect culture, history, and human experience, and how language shapes meaning
Supporting Progress
Students are assessed regularly to monitor their progress and identify areas for development. Teachers provide individual feedback and adapt teaching to meet each student’s needs.
We believe that every student should leave Mosslands with strong communication skills and a love of literature, equipped not only for further study but for the wider world.
“This above all: to thine ownself be true,
And it will follow as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man”.
