SEND and Learning Support

SEND and Learning Support
At Mosslands School, we are committed to being an inclusive learning community where every pupil is valued, supported and enabled to achieve their full potential.
We recognise that some pupils will have special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) which may require additional provision to ensure they can access learning, participate fully in school life and make strong progress. Our ambition for pupils with SEND is the same as for all pupils: high expectations, a broad and balanced curriculum, meaningful inclusion, and successful preparation for adulthood.
The Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) Code of Practice underpins our approach to ensuring high-quality, inclusive provision. It promotes a system that is collaborative, efficient and focused on positive outcomes for children and young people. This means that needs are identified at the earliest possible stage, with appropriate support put in place promptly and clearly communicated to families.
Parents and carers are provided with transparent information about the support and services that can reasonably be expected, and they are actively involved in planning and reviewing provision. Children and young people are also central to decision-making, with their views, aspirations and goals shaping the support they receive.
Importantly, our approach places a strong emphasis on long-term outcomes. We aim to raise aspirations and prepare pupils not only for academic success, but also for adulthood — including employment, independence and full participation in society.

Inclusion at Mosslands means:

  • Acknowledging the right of every student to a first class, high quality education.
  • Supporting everyone to feel that they belong and can achieve their potential.
  • Increasing participation for all students in all aspects of school life (learning activities, clubs, trips and visits).
  • Reducing exclusion, discrimination and barriers to learning and participation.
  • Ensuring that our school cultures, policies and practices value everyone equally.
  • Understanding that removing barriers for some students will benefit students more widely.
  • Support is designed to promote independence and reduce barriers to learning wherever possible.
  • Improving our school for staff and parents/carers as well as students.
  • Emphasising the development of our school and our values, as well as our achievements.
  • Continuing to foster strong relationships between our school and our community.

The students we work with have a wide range of needs. The four main areas of need are:

  • Communication and interaction (including students with Aspergers/Autism)
  • Cognition and Learning (including maths, reading, writing and spelling)
  • Social, emotional and mental health difficulties
  • Sensory and/or physical (including disabilities such as those affecting mobility, sight and hearing)

Where additional support is required, pupils will receive SEND Support through the graduated approach. For pupils with more complex needs, we work closely with the Local Authority to support statutory assessment and, where appropriate, the implementation of an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).

Partnership with Parents and Pupils
We believe that parents/carers and pupils are central partners in planning support. We ensure:

  • Clear communication about identified needs and provision
  • Regular review meetings to evaluate progress and next steps
  • Shared target-setting and outcome planning
  • Opportunities for pupils to contribute to decisions about their support

Our aim is to build positive, transparent relationships based on trust and collaboration.

The SEND Support Department: Mission Statement
The Mosslands School provides a safe, supportive environment for students who have any type of Special Educational Need or Disability, enabling them to access a broad, balanced and enriched curriculum, to make progress, to experience success, to feel valued and fulfilled at school and to prepare them for the next steps in their journey.

Aims and Objectives

  • To support learning and teaching within the school and to raise achievement
  • To ensure that all students with SEND are quickly identified and have access to a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum, differentiated to meet their individual needs, in accordance with the SEND Code of Practice
  • To help students with SEND make progress in line with national expectations by diminishing the difference between their attainment and those of their peers
  • To maintain comprehensive individual assessments and monitoring to inform target setting and programmes of work
  • To build an effective partnership with parents and carers
  • To extend and develop programmes for identified students in order to improve standards of literacy, language and numeracy throughout the school
  • To increase access to the curriculum for SEND students by providing in class support and access arrangements for exams in line with JCQ examination board regulations

SEND Information Report
The information report is written for parents/carers who have children at Mosslands School, or who may be considering their children attending the school or sixth form college. It explains how we identify and support children with special educational needs and disabilities.

What is the Local Offer?
The Local Offer was first introduced in the Green Paper (March 2011) as a local offer of all services available to support disabled children and children with SEND and their families. This easy to understand information will set out what is normally available in schools to help children with lower-level SEND as well as the options available to support families who need additional help to care for their child.

What will it do?
The Local Offer will provide parents/carers with information about how to access services in their area, and what they can expect from those services. With regard to Education, it will let parents/ carers and young people know how school and colleges will support them, and what they can expect across the local settings.
