Curriculum Intent Statement
Geography is a vital subject that enables students to understand the world around them, from the local to the global scale. At The Mosslands School, we believe that a high-quality geography education should inspire students' curiosity and fascination with the world and its people. By equipping our students with the knowledge, skills, and understanding to explore diverse physical and human environments, we aim to prepare them to be responsible global citizens, ready to contribute positively to their communities and the wider world.
Key Aims
Our geography curriculum is designed to:
· Develop students' knowledge and understanding of the Earth's key physical and human processes and features
· Enable students to make sense of their own place in the world and the challenges facing humanity
· Foster critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills to address complex geographical issues
· Encourage students to appreciate the beauty and diversity of the world, as well as the need to protect and sustain it
· Support students in making informed choices about their future study and career pathways
Content and Skills
Throughout Key Stages 3 and 4, our geography curriculum will provide students with a deep understanding of core geographical concepts, including:
· Locational knowledge of countries, continents, and key physical and human features
· The Earth's physical processes, such as plate tectonics, climate, and hydrology
· Human geography, including population, urbanisation, economic activity, and global interdependence
· Environmental challenges, such as climate change, resource management, and sustainability
Students will develop a range of essential geographical skills, including map-reading, data analysis, fieldwork, and the use of geographical information systems (GIS). These skills will enable them to interpret, evaluate, and communicate geographical information effectively.
Progression
Our geography curriculum is carefully sequenced to build upon students' prior knowledge and skills, ensuring a coherent and challenging learning journey. In Key Stage 3, students will develop a strong foundation in the core geographical concepts and skills. As they progress to Key Stage 4, the curriculum will deepen their understanding, encourage more critical analysis, and provide opportunities for independent research and fieldwork.
Wider Impact
Through the study of geography, students will develop a greater appreciation of the world around them and their role as global citizens. Our geography curriculum will empower students to make informed decisions, take action, and contribute positively to the sustainable development of their local and global communities. Furthermore, the transferable skills gained in geography, such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication, will support students in their future academic and career pursuits.
