Type & Frequency of Feedback

Key Stage 3

  • Teachers use live marking and verbal feedback within lessons to comment on areas of merit or improvement.
  • Students complete ‘do now’ retrieval practice activities at the start of every lesson. These are self-marked in red pen, with corrections made if needed.
  • Students use red pens to self-mark their work in every lesson. They are encouraged to always aim to improve their answers, even if they are correct.
  • Teachers use exemplars of students’ work either within lessons or as part of whole-class feedback in a subsequent lesson.
  • Teacher inspect students’ booklets during lessons for quality of presentation and tidiness.
  • Students complete MCQ knowledge tests at the end of each enquiry (roughly one per half term). Students who fail to reach a 75% pass mark will be required to re-sit the test.
  • Students complete homework (fortnightly), which is either on worksheets (self-marked in class) or revision for a knowledge test.
  • Students complete an extended written response at the end of each enquiry (the structure of the task depends on the enquiry). Students will receive personalised feedback and be given the chance to upgrade their answer during lesson time.
  • Students complete two summative assessments per year, one halfway through the year and one towards the end of the year. These comprise MCQs, chronology questions, primary source and interpretation evaluation and analysis and an extended thematic answer drawing on knowledge from across the key stage.

  • Students complete MCQ knowledge tests at the end of each unit (roughly once every two-three weeks). Students who fail to reach a 75% pass mark will be required to re-sit the test.
  • Students complete homework (fortnightly), which is either on worksheets (self-marked in class) or revision for a knowledge test. In Y11, students complete homework in revision booklets to prepare for examinations.
  • Students complete an exam practice question at the end of each unit (roughly every two-three weeks). Students will receive personalised feedback and be given the chance to upgrade their answer during lesson time.
  • Students complete mock exams (past GCSE papers) either at the end of a unit or during scheduled mock exam windows.

Key Stage 5

  • Students complete ‘do now’ retrieval practice activities at the start of every lesson. These are self-marked in red pen, with corrections made if needed.
  • Students’ notes / folders are inspected by teachers, with improvements suggested if necessary
  • Students complete essays at appropriate intervals (e.g. at the end of each unit). This works out to roughly one essay per fortnight. Essays are marked using exam mark schemes with teacher annotations and comments. Teachers use exemplars to model good practice and students are given the chance to upgrade their work in lesson time.
  • Students complete mock exams during scheduled exam windows.
