Design Technology

The Design and Technology: Product Design A Level course offered by the school is the AQA specification Product Design: (3D Design). We have successfully delivered this course for a number of years and have consistently achieved excellent results with our previous cohorts of students. At AS level candidates should develop an understanding of a broad range of materials, with emphasis on the life cycle of products, manufacture and final disposal. This specification also considers the broader issues for the designer including the environmental sustainability of products and consumer safety. At A2, the specification offers candidates the opportunity to further develop the knowledge and practical skills from AS. Candidates will continue to develop a body of coursework alongside an understanding of the processes and procedures of commercial production and manufacture.

How will it be assessed:

The 2 year course is broken down into 4 units, 2 are covered during the AS year and 2 in the A2 year. Each unit accounts for 25% of the total A Level grade. PROD 1 and PROD 3 are the examination units and will test knowledge and understanding of materials, components, processes and manufacturing techniques. There will also be questions that deal with issues such as product life cycles and the history of design over the last 150 years. PROD 2 and PROD 4 are the coursework units that allow candidates to design and manufacture a range of products to suit the needs of consumers in the 21st century.
