English Literature

About the course:

English Literature AQA Specification A

The course is the study of literature in context, within genres and across time.  It will appeal to students that have enjoyed the study of literature at GCSE and who wish to continue a broader and more in depth approach. It would also suit students with an interest in history, and the two subjects would complement each other. 

How will it be assessed:

Unit 1 : Shakespeare and Love Through the Ages   (40% of A Level)

  • Shakespeare: Othello                                               
  • Love Through the Ages: Pre 1900 Poetry Anthology  
  • Prose Text: The Great Gatsby  
  • Open Book Section C Examination 3 hours                                     

Unit 2: World War One and its aftermath (40% of A Level)   

   Texts in Shared Contexts

  • One prose text :  Birdsong                                     
  • One poetry text : War Poetry of Wilfred Owen                                    
  • One drama text :  My Boy Jack     
  • Open Book Examination 2 hours 30 minutes                             

Unit 3: Non Examined Assessment 20% (Coursework)                                           

Independent Critical Study Across Time        

Study of two texts on theme of ‘War and Conflict’ 

One essay 2500 words                       

What is expected of you:

Close analysis of texts across genres and time.  It is important that you have good language skills and coherent written expression.  An enjoyment of reading and literature is essential.  You will be expected to read widely and work independently.  Written work will be essay based and you will be expected to complete an essay a week and meet all deadlines on time.

What it prepares you for:

The A2 level achieved at the end of Year 13 and would prepare students for entry for a wide range of courses not just English Literature.  The course is good preparation for careers in Law, Journalism, Media and Communication and Education. 

Qualification details:

Level 3 Course A Level English Literature

Entry requirements:

You will need to have Grades 5- 9 in the new GCSEs in order to undertake a course at this level.  This is an academically demanding course and as such you will need to have secured a good pass at GCSE in either English Language or English Literature and ideally in both.
