Particles

  1. Use the internet or library to research a material of your choice. Write a summary of its properties and uses.
  2. Using toy building bricks is a simple way of showing how individual particles build up to form substances. Can you suggest another model, perhaps using an everyday situation, which you think may be a good way of modelling how individual particles build up into substances? Applying your knowledge of the particle model, identify a strength and a weakness of your suggested model.
  3. Design a poster or construct a model to illustrate the 3 states of matter: solid, liquid and gas.
  4. Use the internet or library to find out how we make roads safer during freezing weather conditions. Try and find a scientific explanation for anything you find.
  5. Complete the homework worksheets Particles 1 & 2.
  6. Is hot or cold water best for making tea? Use ideas about particles and diffusion to explain your answer in as much detail as possible:
  7. Explain why fizzy drinks spray when they are opened. Use ideas about particles and gas pressure in your answer.

Cells

  1. Create a 3D model representation of a plant or animal cell. - Select the type of cell you plan to model. Then make a brief list of the organelles (mini organs) present in your cell. Research the appearance and function of each of these ‘mini organs’. Use your artistic and creative abilities to create a 3D cell model. (The best ones will go on display) Full information available on the support sheet.
  2. Research the history of the microscope - Using the support sheet research the history of the microscope and how they have improved the design over time.
  3. Present a selection of specialised cells and fully label them
  4. Research a selection of different specialised cells - include a full description of the structure of the cells and their function. This can be presented in any format, Drawing, PPT, etc.
  5. Complete Homework Sheet on Plant and Animal cells - Download the sheet and complete the activities and research movement in and out of a cell
  6. Using the support sheet to research how substances move in and out of a cell. Create a glossary of the key terms
  7. Use the template to create a glossary of the key terms in cell biology.

Element and Atoms

  1. Prepare a Facebook profile for an element, imagining it was a person. It should outline the element's wonderful qualities, where it is useful, and how it can be found.
  2. Research a variety of chemical elements found on the Earth. Use your research to prepare a presentation about the elements. You will need to access the WebQuest for your homework
  3. Create a model to explain the difference between elements, atoms and compounds.
  4. Make a presentation containing five PowerPoint slides about the elements. (make sure your presentation is interesting for other people and include a picture on every slide)
  5. Complete the Mendeleev worksheet

  2. Produce a crossword based on the reproductive system for the rest of the class to complete. Make sure you include clues and an answer sheet.
  3. Research fertility treatments, particularly IVF (In-vitro fertilisation). Use your research to produce a leaflet that can be given to patients who are considering having IVF.
  4. Write a story to tell the journey of a sperm from being produced in the testes to fertilising a female egg cell.
  5. Write an account of the development of baby starting with the initial fertilisation of the egg by a sperm.
  6. Research seed dispersal and describe the different methods that plants use to disperse their seeds.
  7. Produce a labelled diagram of the fertilisation of a plant and the germination of a seed.

  1. The pH of soil affects the plants that can grow. Conduct research on soil pH, soil-testing kits that  gardeners use, and how to change the pH of soil.

Use your research to prepare a leaflet for gardeners on soil pH and how to test it.

  • Making salts: What are the acids present in soils?
  • What is the name of the base used to neutralise soils?
  • What would the salts be called that are produced in this reaction?
  • What other products would be produced?

Write a short song or rap to answer these questions and write word equations for the neutralisation reactions that happen.

  1. Create a marketing poster for antacids explaining what they are used for and how they work.
