Curriculum Intent Statement

Introduction

At The Mosslands School, we believe that music is a vital subject that allows our students to develop their creativity, self-expression, and appreciation for the arts. Aligned with our school's mission to create lifelong learners and good citizens, the music curriculum is designed to empower students to become confident, well-rounded individuals who can contribute positively to their community.

Key Aims

Our music curriculum aims to:

1. Provide students with a solid foundation in musical knowledge, skills, and understanding.

2. Foster a love of music and the performing arts, encouraging students to engage in a range of musical activities.

3. Develop students' critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaborative skills through musical exploration and performance.

4. Celebrate the diversity of musical traditions and cultures, promoting respect, tolerance, and an appreciation for the broader world.

5. Prepare students for further study or careers in the creative industries, equipping them with the necessary skills and confidence.

Content and Skills

Throughout Key Stages 3 and 4, students will engage with a broad and balanced music curriculum that covers a range of musical genres, styles, and traditions. They will develop proficiency in the core musical skills of performing, composing, and appraising, as well as gaining a deeper understanding of musical theory, history, and technology.

Students will have opportunities to learn and perform on a variety of instruments, both individually and as part of ensembles. They will also explore the creative process of composition, experimenting with different musical elements to express their ideas and emotions.

Progression

The music curriculum is carefully sequenced to ensure that students build upon their prior knowledge and skills, allowing them to make sustained progress throughout their secondary education. In Key Stage 3, the focus will be on developing a broad musical foundation, while in Key Stage 4, students will have the opportunity to specialise and deepen their understanding in preparation for further study or career pathways.

Wider Impact

Through the music curriculum, we aim to empower our students to become confident, creative, and culturally aware individuals. The subject will not only develop their musical abilities but also their communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills, which are essential for success in a wide range of future endeavours.

By fostering a love of music and the performing arts, we hope to inspire our students to become lifelong learners, actively engaged in their local and global communities, and ready to make a positive contribution to the world.
