Curriculum Intent Statement

Introduction

At The Mosslands School, the Physical Education (PE) curriculum is central to our mission of developing lifelong learners and good citizens. Through high-quality, inclusive PE lessons, we aim to empower our students to become physically literate, confident, and resilient individuals who can contribute positively to their community.

Key Aims

Our PE curriculum is designed to:

1. Develop students' physical competence, knowledge, and understanding of a range of sports and physical activities.

2. Foster a love of physical activity and healthy lifestyles, enabling students to make informed choices about their wellbeing.

3. Build students' character, including resilience, teamwork, and leadership skills, which can be applied across the curriculum and in their future lives.

4. Provide opportunities for all students to experience success and achieve their personal best, regardless of their starting points or abilities.

Content and Skills

Our PE curriculum covers a diverse range of sports and activities, including team games, individual pursuits, and outdoor and adventurous activities. Students will develop a deep understanding of the tactical, technical, and fitness components required for successful participation. They will also learn about the importance of nutrition, injury prevention, and the physiological changes that occur during exercise.

Progression

Throughout Key Stages 3 and 4, students will build upon their prior learning, developing increasingly complex skills and tactics. They will have opportunities to apply their knowledge in competitive and collaborative settings, as well as to take on leadership roles. Our curriculum is designed to support students in making informed choices about their physical activity and to prepare them for further study or participation in sport and physical recreation.

Wider Impact

The PE curriculum at The Mosslands School is integral to our vision of developing well-rounded, resilient, and ambitious young people. By fostering a love of physical activity and healthy lifestyles, we aim to empower our students to make positive choices that will benefit their physical and mental wellbeing, both now and in the future. The skills and attributes developed through PE will also support students in their academic studies and future careers, enabling them to become active, confident, and successful members of their community.
