Construction

At Mosslands, our Vocational Award in Construction and the Built Environment offers a practical and engaging route into the world of construction for students in Years 10 and 11. This Level 1 & 2 qualification, accredited by Eduqas, is designed to develop hands-on skills and real-world understanding through the plan, do, review approach to learning.

Through the course, students gain practical experience in a range of trades and disciplines, including joinery, decorating, and plumbing, building the essential skills and confidence needed for further study, apprenticeships, or work-based learning in the construction industry.

The course is structured around two key units:

  • Unit 1 – Introduction to the Built Environment
An on-screen examination (1 hour 30 minutes, 40% of the qualification) assessing students’ understanding of the construction industry, its roles, and its impact on the built environment.

  • Unit 3 – Constructing the Built Environment
A practical, controlled assessment (30 hours, 60% of the qualification) where students demonstrate and apply their skills in realistic, work-related projects.

Our approach
Students are immersed in realistic, industry-style learning environments to strengthen both their technical skills and problem-solving abilities. By taking part in practical tasks, they learn to plan effectively, carry out work to professional standards, and review their outcomes critically – essential habits for success in construction.

Key Skills Developed
The Construction and Built Environment curriculum enables students to develop:

  • Technical Knowledge – Understanding core concepts in construction, including materials, tools, safety procedures, and the roles within the industry.

  • Practical Competence – Learning and applying trade skills in joinery, decorating, plumbing, and other construction areas, ensuring accuracy, quality, and safe working practices.

  • Project Management Skills – Planning, sequencing, and completing construction tasks to meet specifications and deadlines, reflecting real industry expectations.

  • Problem-Solving and Adaptability – Identifying solutions to challenges on-site, adapting methods when needed, and making informed decisions.

  • Collaboration and Communication – Working effectively as part of a team, communicating clearly, and following professional standards in a work environment.

Progression
On completion, learners will be well-prepared to move on to A-Level study, apprenticeships, or further vocational training. The course builds a strong foundation of trade skills, industry awareness, and work-readiness.

By the end of the programme, our aim is for every student to leave with not only technical ability, but also the resilience, teamwork, and initiative needed to thrive in the construction sector.
