Hospitality and Catering

When you join the Hospitality and Catering course at Mosslands, you will develop both practical and theoretical knowledge of one of the UK's largest and most dynamic industries. Delivered over Years 10 and 11, this vocational qualification allows students to build real-world skills while gaining a strong foundation for further education or careers in catering, nutrition, or hospitality.

The course is tailored to suit learners of all abilities, and assessment is designed to support those who excel through coursework and controlled practical tasks, as well as an externally assessed exam.

What You Study

The course is split into two key units:

  • Unit 1 – The Hospitality and Catering Industry
Focuses on understanding how the industry operates, including job roles, working conditions, and health & safety. This unit is assessed by an external exam.

  • Unit 2 – Hospitality and Catering in Action
A practical unit where students learn how to prepare, cook, and present nutritious dishes. Assessment is based on controlled assessment and practical performance.

Key Concepts and Skills Developed

Just like with Maths Mastery, students in Hospitality and Catering build a range of interconnected knowledge:

  • Declarative Knowledge – Students learn about food safety, nutrition, job roles, and how different establishments operate.

  • Procedural Fluency – Practical lessons ensure students master cooking techniques, knife skills, preparation methods, and hygiene practices.

  • Conditional Knowledge – Students apply what they’ve learned to respond to real-life catering scenarios, such as planning menus for specific dietary needs or event types.

Progression and Opportunities

The qualification supports progression to further study at Level 3 or into a catering apprenticeship. It’s also ideal preparation for careers in food service, hospitality, dietetics, event planning, or running your own business.

This course helps students become confident, competent, and creative in the kitchen—skills they’ll carry for life, whether in a career or at home.
