Year 11
Curriculum Map
This curriculum map provides an overview of the music journey students will experience throughout the academic year. It outlines the sequence of musical styles, composition techniques, and performance opportunities alongside key assessment points designed to monitor and support student progress. The curriculum is carefully sequenced to build knowledge progressively, with each unit providing the foundation for future learning, ensuring all students develop musical understanding, practical skills, and creative expression appropriate to their age and stage.
Half Term | Unit(s) of Work | Key Assessments |
Autumn 1 |
Performance Composition 2 Exam Preparation |
At the start of year 11 the ‘set briefs’ for the compositions are released. This will be an immediate priority as the students will have to write a composition which responds to this. The students will also need to focus on refining performances from year 10 in preparation for the main GCSE assessment after Christmas. Exam preparation will continue but become more focussed on past paper questions than it was in year 10. The musical elements (Dr Smith ) will still fundamentally underpin much of the answers however. |
Autumn 2 |
Performance Composition 2 Exam Preparation |
The work from the 1st half term will largely continue into the second, however at the end of this half term the students will all need to be formally tracked, in terms of, where they currently are in relation to performance, composition and appraising. After school catch up sessions will begin for any year 11 who is a cause of concern. |
Spring 1 |
Performance Assessment Composition 2 Exam Preparation |
The main goal of this half term is to record the performances. This will need to be done as a formal performance day. Mop ups could still happen before the formal deadline of the 5th May, but this is not ideal. Work will continue on composition 2, but this hopefully will be at the refining stage as well as completing the composition log document. Exam preparation will continue using past paper material. |
Spring 2 |
Composition Exam Preparation |
The students will mainly be working on the exam preparation but may still be refining coursework tasks to achieve the correct overall marks. All coursework will be submitted by the 5th May. |
Summer 1 |
Performance Composition 1 Composition 1 Log Exam Preparation |
Exam preparation will continue until the exam is completed. |
