At The Mosslands School, we believe that Drama is a powerful and transformative subject that nurtures creativity, confidence, and emotional intelligence. Rooted in our school’s mission to develop lifelong learners and responsible citizens, our Drama curriculum offers students a safe and supportive environment to explore human experiences, build empathy, and express themselves with clarity and conviction.
Key Aims
Our Drama curriculum aims to:
-
Develop students’ performance and communication skills through a variety of theatrical styles and techniques.
-
Encourage self-confidence, teamwork, and resilience through practical exploration and rehearsal.
-
Foster creative thinking and problem-solving through devising and interpreting performance material.
-
Promote an appreciation of theatre and performance from diverse cultures and historical contexts.
-
Equip students with transferable skills relevant to further study, the workplace, and modern society.
Content and Skills
Across Key Stages 3 and 4, students will engage with a rich and varied Drama curriculum that combines practical performance with analytical and reflective learning. They will explore improvisation, script work, devised theatre, physical theatre, and vocal techniques, while developing an understanding of theatrical terminology and staging.
Students will experience a range of genres and practitioners—from Shakespeare to contemporary theatre—gaining insight into different storytelling methods and social issues. Collaboration is central, and students will regularly perform in groups, respond to feedback, and evaluate their own and others’ work.
Progression
The Drama curriculum is designed to build progressively, with each year deepening students’ understanding of performance, characterisation, and dramatic structure. In Key Stage 3, students establish a strong foundation in creative expression and ensemble work. In Key Stage 4, students refine these skills through more complex performance pieces and detailed written analysis, preparing them for GCSE Drama and beyond.
Wider Impact
Through Drama, students at Mosslands develop into articulate, empathetic, and confident individuals. The subject enhances their emotional literacy, communication, and leadership skills—qualities vital in every walk of life.
By celebrating individual voice and ensemble collaboration, the Drama curriculum empowers students to engage with the world thoughtfully, contribute positively to society, and carry a lifelong appreciation for the performing arts.
