What you learn about:
Hospitality and Catering is an engaging, vocational subject that allows students to explore the practical and theoretical aspects of one of the UK’s largest industries. It provides a strong foundation for those interested in careers in food preparation, nutrition, event management, or the wider hospitality sector.
The course promotes independence, creativity, and problem-solving through both written work and hands-on cooking experiences. Students learn how to plan menus, prepare dishes, and understand the requirements of a professional kitchen.
During the course, students will study:

The Hospitality and Catering Industry – Understanding different types of establishments, job roles, working conditions, legislation, and health and safety.

Food Safety and Hygiene – Learning the principles of safe food storage, handling, and preparation.

Nutrition and Menu Planning – Studying how to plan balanced, nutritious meals for specific clients and dietary needs.

Food Preparation and Cooking Techniques – Developing practical skills including knife handling, cooking methods, presentation, and portion control.
Assessment:
The course consists of two units:

Unit 1: The Hospitality and Catering Industry
A written examination (1 hour 30 minutes) assessing understanding of the industry – 40% of the final grade. -
Unit 2: Hospitality and Catering in Action
A controlled assessment where students plan, prepare, cook, and present a two-course meal in response to a brief – 60% of the final grade.
Both units must be successfully completed to achieve the qualification.
Other Information:
This course prepares students for progression to further education or apprenticeships in catering, hospitality, or food science. It also equips learners with essential life skills such as planning, budgeting, and cooking nutritious meals.
