Curriculum Intent Statement
Introduction
At The Mosslands School, the study of Languages is central to our mission of developing lifelong learners and good citizens who are ready to contribute positively to the wider, diverse community. Through the acquisition of language skills, our students will gain the knowledge, competencies, and cultural awareness necessary to thrive in an increasingly globalised world.
Key Aims
Our Languages curriculum aims to:
· Equip students with the ability to communicate effectively in at least one additional language, building on their existing language skills.
· Foster an appreciation for the diversity of languages and cultures, promoting respect, tolerance, and understanding.
· Develop students' cognitive abilities, critical thinking skills, and problem-solving capacities through the challenge of language learning.
· Prepare students for further education, employment, and active participation in an interconnected world.
Content and Skills
Students will develop a deep understanding of the grammar, vocabulary, and structures of their chosen language(s). They will also gain proficiency in the four key language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Importantly, our curriculum will emphasise the practical application of language skills, enabling students to use their knowledge in real-world scenarios.
Progression
Throughout Key Stage 3 and 4, students will build upon their prior language knowledge, progressing from basic communication to more advanced linguistic and cultural competencies. The curriculum will be carefully sequenced to ensure that students master foundational concepts before moving on to more complex material, fostering confidence and success.
Wider Impact
The study of Languages at The Mosslands School will have a transformative impact on our students, empowering them to become global citizens who can navigate diverse cultural and linguistic
landscapes. By cultivating multilingual and multicultural skills, we aim to open doors to a wide range of educational and career opportunities, ultimately contributing to the social and economic prosperity of our local and global communities.
