KS3 Rationale

In Music, we develop students' creative and artistic knowledge through performance, composition and appraising a wide variety of music genres and styles. The curriculum is grown out of a curiosity to explore and develop new skills through becoming confident musicians.

A high-quality music education ensures all students:

  • Have an understanding of the different musical styles of diverse communities.
  • Can develop the skills to work with others on a variety of musical projects and styles.
  • Can develop the skills of confident performers/presenters, which are vital skills needed in the workplace.
  • Develop an understanding of our musical history by studying Liverpool's rich cultural connections to music through learning about the music successful artists such as The Beatles.
  • Can develop music interests outside the classroom by offering every student the opportunity to participate in a music-related trip.
  • Can develop music interests outside the classroom by offering students the opportunity to participate in extracurricular opportunities.

Key concepts of music allow students to develop knowledge and skills in:

  • Performance - by producing a variety of solo and ensemble performances. Ensemble performances will also follow the 'musical futures' way of working. This is an imaginative way of allowing students to work independently in small groups using stimulus materials where the teacher becomes the facilitator to further enhance immerging skills.
  • Composition - by producing a variety of solo and ensemble compositions. Solo compositions include looking at how music can tell a story when accompanied to silent movies, through to how modern ICT technologies can be used to produce music. Ensemble compositions include how songs can be linked together, how music can accompany a drama scene, through to creating a complete song.
  • Appraising - by appraising a variety of music, students will not only be exposed to music, they would not normally choose to listen to, but also will begin to understand historical significance of certain styles of music such as studying blues music.
Teamwork We work as a team to produce creative pieces of music which we are proud to showcase.
Respect We respect each other's work even if other people's creative choices and decisions are different to ours. We show respect when working through creative differences.
Ambition We show ambition to become 'home-grown' musicians who are proud to represent the Wirral in what they do.
Community We use our skills as musicians to enhance the good name of the school in the community and bring joy to the local residents. We show a willingness to raise money for good causes through the skills we have.
Knowledge We develop a sound knowledge of a variety of musical styles and cultures.
