What you learn about:
The OCR Cambridge National in Sport Studies (J829) offers students aged 14–16 the opportunity to explore the dynamic world of sport through both theory and practice. It helps students understand contemporary issues in sport such as participation, ethics, technology, and the role of governing bodies. In addition, learners build leadership and performance skills in practical contexts, and have the option to examine sport’s relationship with media. This qualification supports progression into Level 3 technical routes, A Level PE, or apprenticeships.
During the course, students will study:

Contemporary Issues in Sport – Investigating topics like motivation, ethics, technology in sport, and the influence of national governing bodies.

Performance and Leadership in Sports Activities – Developing practical skills by performing in two different sports and applying leadership skills to plan and deliver activity sessions, then evaluating performance.

Sport and the Media (Optional Unit) – Understanding the ways in which media portrays sport, including the impact of modern technology, and evaluating its role in shaping public perceptions.
Assessment:
The qualification comprises three units:

One mandatory external exam unit (40%) – Contemporary Issues in Sport is assessed via exam by OCR.

One mandatory internal assessed NEA unit (30%) – Performance and Leadership in Sports Activities is internally marked and externally moderated.

One optional internal assessed NEA unit (30%) – Students choose either Sport and the Media or another available NEA unit, which is internally marked and externally moderated.

Grading: Students can achieve Distinction*, Distinction, Merit, or Pass at Level 2; and Distinction, Merit, or Pass at Level 1.

This qualification develops not only athletic knowledge and practical skills, but also transferable skills such as presentation, teamwork, leadership, and research—equipping learners for further study, apprenticeships, or careers in sport, media, or leadership.
