Knowledge & Skills

The Knowledge and Skills overviews show the specific physical education content students will learn in each unit of study throughout the year. These documents outline both the substantive knowledge (rules, strategies, and principles of fitness) and the disciplinary skills (movement techniques, tactical applications, and performance analysis) that students will develop. Each unit is broken down to clearly identify what students need to know and what they should be able to do upon completion. Through the systematic development of both knowledge and skills, students build physical literacy, teamwork capabilities, and a lifelong appreciation for physical activity appropriate to their stage of learning.

Rugby

Unit Progress Criteria
Knowledge Skills
  • Recap — accurately answers formative assessment on previous learnt information during lessons
  • Rugby playing rules and regulations such as passing backwards only, tackling below the shoulder and play-the-ball basics
  • Rugby pitch regulations such as try-line, 22m line, touchline and in-goal area
  • Rugby basic rules and causes of stoppage (e.g. knock-on, forward pass, held up, offside at the tackle)
  • Disciplinary literacy: balance, power, speed, muscular strength, muscular endurance
  • Head — can demonstrate basic tactical awareness of moving into space to receive a pass
  • Head — can apply basic rules and regulations of rugby
  • Execute — foundation movement techniques for tackling, passing and rucking
  • Execute — basic send and receive techniques (spin pass, pop pass)
  • Execute — basic sport specific techniques (e.g. stationary tackling, tackling, rucking, movement, game play)
  • Activity — can demonstrate muscular strength (e.g. tackling, contact situations, physically contesting)
  • Activity — can demonstrate power (e.g. driving through contact, accelerating into space)

Football

  • Football playing rules and regulations such as kick-offs, throw-ins, corner kicks and basic movements (passing, dribbling, controlling)
  • Football pitch regulations such as penalty area, goal area, centre circle and basic field markings
  • Football basic free-kick rules and causes (e.g. handball, pushing, tripping, offside position, dangerous play)
  • Disciplinary literacy: balance, power, speed, muscular strength, muscular endurance
  • Head — can demonstrate basic tactical awareness of moving into space to receive a pass
  • Head — can apply basic rules and regulations of football
  • Execute — foundation movement techniques for receiving, moving and passing
  • Execute — basic send and receive techniques (push pass, first touch control)
  • Execute — basic sport specific techniques (e.g. receiving, movement, passing, shooting)
  • Activity — can demonstrate speed (e.g. movement off the ball, sprinting into space)
  • Activity — can demonstrate power (e.g. striking the ball, jumping to head)
  • TRACK — can demonstrate school TRACK value of teamwork
  • TRACK — can demonstrate school TRACK value of community (involved in lesson, extra-curricular sport, club or school teams)

Dance

  • Execute — basic capoeira-influenced movement patterns with control
  • Activity — can demonstrate balance and muscular strength while holding static positions
  • TRACK — can demonstrate school TRACK value of knowledge (understands and can explain what is being performed)

Table Tennnis

  • Table tennis playing rules and regulations such as serving diagonally, one-bounce rule and basic scoring
  • Table tennis basic point scoring rules and causes (e.g. ball hitting the net, out of bounds, double bounce, service fault)
  • Disciplinary literacy: balance, power, speed, muscular strength, muscular endurance
  • Head — can demonstrate basic tactical awareness of shot placement to open up space
  • Head — can apply basic rules and regulations of table tennis
  • Execute — foundation movement techniques for forehand and backhand shots
  • Execute — basic send and receive techniques (serve, rally shot)
  • Execute — basic sport specific techniques (e.g. serving, forehand, backhand, rallying)
  • Activity — can demonstrate speed (e.g. quick footwork, reaction to the ball)

Volleyball

  • Volleyball playing rules and regulations such as three-touch limit, no catching/holding the ball and rotation system
  • Volleyball court regulations such as boundary lines, service area, attack line and rotation positions
  • Volleyball basic point scoring rules and causes (e.g. ball landing in bounds/out of bounds, net touches, service errors, rotation faults)
  • Disciplinary literacy: balance, power, speed, muscular strength, muscular endurance
  • Head — can demonstrate basic tactical awareness of positioning to support teammates
  • Head — can apply basic rules and regulations of volleyball
  • Execute — foundation movement techniques for the dig, set and serve
  • Execute — basic send and receive techniques (underarm serve, forearm dig)
  • Execute — basic sport specific techniques (e.g. serve, dig, set, volley, rallies)
  • Activity — can demonstrate power (e.g. serving, jumping to volley)
  • Activity — can demonstrate muscular strength (e.g. controlled digging and setting under pressure)

Basketball

  • Disciplinary literacy: balance, power, speed, muscular strength, muscular endurance
  • Head — can demonstrate basic tactical awareness of moving into space to receive a pass
  • Head — can apply basic rules and regulations of basketball
  • Execute — foundation movement techniques for passing, moving and shooting
  • Execute — basic send and receive techniques (chest pass, bounce pass)
  • Execute — basic sport specific techniques (e.g. passing, moving, dribbling, lay-up, shooting)
